From First Steps to First Words: The Emotional Reality of Raising an 18-Month-Old

Motherhood is a journey that quietly transforms you in ways you never imagined. For Bhumi Hemrajani, it has been a path of patience, growth, and deep emotional connection. At 37, Bhumi is raising her 18-month-old son, Ruhaan, with love and intention. Born in Dahod, Gujarat, and now living in Godhra, Gujarat, her journey has shaped her into a more present and emotionally aware mother, choosing gentleness and understanding in every step of parenting.

Here is her story, in her own words.

How has your journey shaped the way you’re raising him?

My journey into motherhood has made me more patient, present, and emotionally aware. It has shaped the way I raise my son with love, gentleness, and understanding.

Looking back at the newborn phase to now, what has changed the most in your life and in you as a person?

From the newborn phase to now, the biggest change has been within me. I have become stronger, more patient, and more selfless. My priorities have completely shifted, and my baby is now at the center of everything I do.

Your feeding journey from breastfeeding to solids is such a big transition. What has that experience been like for you, and what was the hardest part no one prepared you for?

My feeding journey has been a mix of learning and emotions. Transitioning from breastfeeding to solids was both exciting and overwhelming. The hardest part was not knowing what works best every day and dealing with the constant worry about whether he is eating enough.

Starting solids can be messy, confusing, and sometimes stressful. What worked for you, and what is one thing you stopped worrying about over time?

Starting solids was definitely messy and confusing, but I learned to go with the flow. What worked for me was being patient and letting my baby explore food. Over time, I stopped worrying about the mess and focused more on his experience.

Do you remember the moment he took his first steps? What did that moment feel like for you as a mother?

Yes, I clearly remember the moment he took his first steps. It was such an emotional and proud moment for me as a mother. I felt pure joy, mixed with a little realization that my baby is growing up so fast.

At 18 months, babies grow so fast it almost feels unreal. Is there a moment lately that made you pause and think, “he’s not a baby anymore”?

Lately, small moments like the way he tries to communicate or shows his preferences make me feel that he is not a baby anymore. It is beautiful yet emotional to witness his growth.

Everyday life with a toddler can be exhausting. What does a typical day in your home look like right now, from the chaos to the calm?

A typical day in my life is a mix of chaos and beautiful moments. From managing his routine, playtime, meals, and little tantrums to those calm cuddles and smiles, it is exhausting but deeply fulfilling.

This stage comes with big emotions and little communication. How do you handle tantrums, clingy phases, or days when nothing seems to work?

Handling tantrums and clingy phases can be tough, but I try to stay calm and patient. I remind myself that he is still learning to express his emotions, so I respond with love and comfort rather than frustration.

There’s a constant pressure to start teaching early. What are you consciously trying to teach him at this age, and what are you choosing not to rush?

At this stage, I am focusing on teaching him basic values like love, kindness, and communication. I am choosing not to rush milestones and letting him grow at his own pace.

Mom guilt changes with every phase. What triggers it for you right now, and how do you remind yourself that you’re doing enough?

Mom guilt is real and keeps changing. Sometimes it comes from feeling like I am not doing enough, but I remind myself that being present and giving my best every day is enough.

If you could freeze one small moment from this phase forever, what would it be and why?

If I could freeze one moment, it would be our quiet cuddles and the way he looks at me with pure love. These are the moments I will cherish forever.

A Journey That Changes You Quietly

Bhumi’s story is a gentle reminder that motherhood is not about having all the answers. It is about growing alongside your child, learning every day, and choosing love even in the most exhausting moments. From messy meals to quiet cuddles, it is these small, real moments that shape the journey.
