When it comes to maintaining your newborn baby’s hygiene, there are no shortcuts. Newborn babies are highly susceptible to infection as their immune systems are still developing. This means that they need extra special care & attention, especially when it comes to hygiene. Here are some important tips that you can follow to ensure that your precious little baby stays healthy and happy.
1. Keep skin clean & dry
Keeping your baby’s sensitive skin clean and dry is very important. But that doesn’t mean that your baby needs a bath every day. In fact, newborns only need to be bathed two or three times a week, at most, as they do not tend to get very dirty. In the first few weeks, if your baby’s umbilical cord stump hasn’t fallen off yet, it is recommended that you only stick to sponge baths. When bathing your little one, use baby care products with mild ingredients that will cleanse skin, yet keep it moisturized and supple. Softsens Baby Wash is enriched with Natural Milk Cream and Shea Butter, which gently cleanses the skin without drying it out. It also contains a mild "Tear Free" formulation which prevents any kind of skin and eye irritation. The baby’s shampoo should be Tear-free, hypoallergenic, alkali- free and paraben-free. Baby’s tresses and skin is extremely delicate and tender so utmost care should be taken, while choosing new born baby bath products.
Even though you might bathe your baby twice or thrice a week, it’s important to clean between their folds on a daily basis. Do this using a damp washcloth or sponge and make sure you gently dry their skin after. Moisture usually tends to accumulate in the skin between their folds, causing it to become red or irritated. Don’t miss the skin behind their knees, their arm pits, diaper region and even under and around the mouth.
2. Sanitize your hands and your home
When it comes to your baby, it doesn’t hurt to be overly careful! Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your baby to avoid passing on germs or clean your hands with Baby wet wipes. If you have visitors, make sure they also sanitize their hands properly before touching the baby.
Your baby can pick up germs in many different ways, so here’s a quick checklist of items and places around the house that you must sanitize properly:
Your baby’s feeding equipment - Feeding bottles must always be washed and sterilized.
Your baby’s cot, changing area and feeding area.
Baby’s toys, pacifiers and other items that he/she comes in contact with.
Kitchens and bathrooms must be cleaned well with disinfectants.
Surfaces that you touch often with your hands, such as doorknobs and table tops, should be disinfected regularly.
3. Keep changing those diapers
Changingyour baby’s diapers may seem like a never-ending job, but it is extremely crucial. By changing your baby’s diaper as soon as it gets soiled, you can reduce the chances of nappy rash and other irritations. When changing the diaper, clean your baby’s diaper area well using gentle baby wipes and make sure you don’t leave it damp. In the case of baby girls, always clean from front to back to prevent any kind of infection. Softsens Baby Wipes are natural, safe, effective and pediatrician-approved. They are also enriched with lotion and Vitamin E to moisturize your baby’s skin and cooling Aloe Vera that soothes irritated skin.
4. Keep your baby’s finger nails neat & trim
Trimming your baby’s nails often prevents dirt and germs from accumulating underneath. This is important as babies often put their fingers in their mouth. Your baby can also accidentally scratch themselves with their nails.
The secret to trimming your baby’s nails easily and effortlessly is to do it while they are asleep. Always make sure you use a special baby-recommended nail clipper or baby scissors while doing so.
5. Massage your baby
Massaging the baby is an age old tradition in India which is now being inculcated by various other cultures across the world. The several benefits of massaging an infant baby are, it relaxes the baby, encourages the baby to sleep deeper and longer as well as builds a close and loving relationship between the parent and the baby. Softsens Baby Massage oil is light, soothing formulation that nourishes hydrates and moisturizes baby’s sensitive skin, leaving it soft and supple. It is infused with Vitamin E and olive extracts which soothe and condition the baby’s skin keeping it hydrated for longer
6. Avoid large groups and crowds
Once again, your newborn baby is very susceptible to infections and hence it is advisable to stay away from crowded areas. Try and limit exposure to larger groups of people until your baby is at least six weeks old.
7. Introduce them to pets with care
If you have a dog or cat in the household, introduce them to your baby but do ensure that you are always there to supervise. Make sure that your pet does not lick your newborn baby’s hands and face as this can possibly lead to a transmission of germs and infection.
