The arrival of winter brings with it joy and festive cheer, but it can be a harsh season, especially for baby’s delicate skin. The cold, dry air strips away the skin’s natural moisture, leaving it dry, itchy, flaky and irritated. But fear not, moms & dads! With the right care and attention, you can keep your baby’s skin soft, supple & nourished through the winter months. Here are some effective tips on how to prevent and care for baby’s dry skin during winter.
Winter Bath Time Basics:
• Turn down the heat: Hot baths can contribute to dryness even further. Give baby a lukewarm bath 2-3 times a week and limit it to 10-15 minutes at most.
• Choose gentle cleansers: Use gentle, mildly-formulated baby cleansers that will not strip away natural oils and help keep baby’s skin hydrated.
• Pat, don’t rub skin: Avoid rubbing baby’s skin after bathtime and instead, pat it dry very gently with a soft towel, to prevent any irritation.
Moisturization is Vital:
• Moisturize generously: Give baby a daily massage with a gentle moisturizing lotion or cream and concentrate on areas prone to dryness like their cheeks, hands, and feet.
• Look for natural hydrating ingredients: Pick moisturizers that contain mild and natural ingredients known for their hydrating properties, such as shea butter or milk cream.
• Don't skip lip care: Baby’s lips can get chapped pretty easily, so protect them with a gentle, baby-safe lip balm or a tiny amount of petroleum jelly.
Baby’s Clothing and Environment:
• Layer up: Layering is the best way to keep baby cozy without overheating them. Buy breathable & soft clothing made from natural fibers like organic cotton or bamboo.
• Use a humidifier: A cool-mist humidifier adds moisture to the air and prevents skin dryness and irritation to keep baby more comfortable.
• Seek out the sun: Boost that Vitamin D production with a little sun and fresh air every day, but be careful to avoid the harsh midday sun.
• Steer clear of harsh chemicals: Switch to a gentle laundry detergent that is formulated for sensitive skin. Choose gentle alcohol-free baby wipes to keep their skin moisturized.
• Keep them hydrated from within: Offer lots of fluids to keep baby well hydrated. For infants, offer more breast milk or formula.
• Watch out for any irritation: Check baby’s skin daily for any signs of irritation like redness or flakiness. Consult your pediatrician if necessary.
By following these simple tips and a gentle skincare routine consistently, you can help ensure your baby’s skin stays soft, healthy and happy all through the season. Oh, and did we mention snuggles? LOTS of snuggles is key to having a cozy and comfortable winter.
