Everything you need to know about bamboo fabric

When we think of products made from bamboo, most of us normally associate bamboo with furniture or food, but not baby clothing, right? So, you might be surprised to know that fabric made from Bamboo is one of the more sustainable and eco-friendly clothing fabrics, making it absolutely perfect for your baby’s delicate skin.

Here are some of the reasons why Bamboo is such a sustainable resource:

    • It is an extremely fast-growing plant: Bamboo can grow very fast, with certain species growing up to a few feet every day. Once it is harvested, it doesn’t even need to be replanted as it can replenish itself due to its wide network of roots.

    • It requires barely any water and no fertilizers for optimal growth: Bamboo requires very little water to grow, making it extremely eco-friendly. Cotton, on the other hand, requires immense amounts of irrigation. Bamboo is also naturally resistant to pests and does not require pesticide or fertilizer to grow well.

    • Enhances the quality of surrounding air and soil: Bamboo absorbs much more carbon dioxide and produces 30% more oxygen than average forest areas, making it extremely healthy for the atmosphere.

    • Biodegradable: Bamboo fabrics are 100% biodegradable and do not produce dangerous gases that can harm our atmosphere.

Why is bamboo fabric great for babies?

How is a bamboo fabric made?

Bamboo fibers can be extracted from the bamboo plant either mechanically or chemically. In the mechanical process, bamboo is broken down using natural enzymes and then mechanically combed to obtain the fiber. However, as it is very labor-intensive, most bamboo fibers are produced through the chemical process. Bamboo fabric that is manufactured chemically is a regenerated cellulose fiber that is derived from natural bamboo fibers through a process of regeneration. This fiber is also referred to as ‘bamboo rayon’ or ‘bamboo viscose’ because of the way it is produced and the similarities to rayon.

These days, more and more eco-friendly methods are being developed to make the chemical process even safer for both the environment and workers. Modern bamboo fabrics are produced in accordance with strict environmental standards that are recognized internationally.

At Softsens, all our bamboo products are made using bamboo viscose that is derived from natural bamboo fibers. Come discover and fall in love with our beautifully soft, strong and sustainable fabrics that are ideal for your baby’s delicate skin.
