Your baby’s sensitive skin can get easily affected during the cold weather, leaving it dry, red or inflamed. Make sure that this doesn’t happen by following a few simple winter care tips on a daily basis. We put together a quick checklist to help you keep your baby warm & cozy during winter.
1. Dress your baby in layers
Babies lose heat much faster than adults and it’s important to keep them warm during the cold weather, but it’s just as important to make sure that they do not get overheated. A great way to handle this is by dressing your baby in layers. That way, if your little one begins to feel warm, you can take off a layer or two. Often, you can tell if your baby is uncomfortable or warm if they seem a little flushed, or are sweating excessively. If you live in very cold conditions, always cover their heads, ears, hands and little feet, especially when going outdoors. You can make them wear soft organic cotton half sleeved onesies and pair it up with a nice pair of tights and a jacket. In case the baby starts feeling hot the jacket can be removed for a while.
2.sensitive skin deserves soft, gentle fabric
When you dress your baby in layers, make sure that the fabric which comes in direct contact with their skin is soft, gentle and breathable, so as not to irritate their sensitive skin. Cotton and flannel work well, whereas wool can tend to cause skin flare ups.
3. Protect those chubby cheeks and rosy lips
In dry weather, you will often notice that your baby’s cheeks and lips are the first to be affected. Keep their delicate skin moisturized and soft with baby skin cream and a baby lip balm. Check out the Softsens Baby Cream which is enriched with natural milk cream and shea butter that absorbs quickly into the skin leaving it deeply nourished and moisturized.
4. Make bath-time quick
Long baths can dry out your baby’s skin even more. Limit bath-time to ten minutes at most. Use baby soaps and body washes which have ingredients like Natural Milk Cream, Shea Butter, honey, almond oil and other such moisturizing ingredients during bath time, it will reduce the chances of the baby’s sensitive skin to dry out. Before you remove your baby’s clothes for a bath, make sure that the room is at a comfortable temperature. Use lukewarm water to bathe your little one and bath products that are more suited to care for dry, winter skin. Softsens Baby Natural Bar is formulated with the goodness of rich emollients like natural almond oil and pure honey that lock in moisture, while gently cleansing and nourishing your baby’s delicate skin to leave it soft, smooth and hydrated. If you do this, make sure you give them a sponge bath daily and clean well under folds.
5. Watch out for signs of eczema
Though eczema is known to be a hereditary condition, it can flare up even more with a change in temperature. Look out for red bumps or scaly skin. Consult your pediatrician if you see signs of eczema as it can be quite uncomfortable for your baby. Make your baby wear 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Apparels, because they do not use toxic chemicals during the production process, which is a common cause of skin allergies in babies.
6. Hydrate on the inside and outside
The most important rule of winter skin care! Proper moisturizing can prevent most skin problems that are caused due to dry, cold weather. As soon as you are done bathing your baby, pat their skin dry quickly and massage a gently baby moisturizer into their skin. Softsens Moisturizing Lotion and Softsens Baby cream are both gentle, hypoallergenic products that are perfect for baby’s skin in winter. Keep your baby well hydrated from the inside too! Breastfeeding is great for their immunity and will keep them from getting dehydrated.
7. Swaddling keeps your baby safe & warm at night
Heavy blankets can lead to overheating and are not safe for small babies. Instead bundle your little one in a warm yet breathable baby swaddle to keep them cozy and comfortable all night long. Even when your baby is not swaddled, keep the baby’s hands and legs covered at all times with a soft swaddle blanket to avoid any mosquito and insect bites. Click here to see our Softsens Baby Swaddles that are made from 100% GOTS certified organic muslin cotton and are lightweight & breathable, ensuring your baby doesn’t get overheated, or suffer from potential skin irritations and rashes.
8. Continue your massage routine
A massage is great for your baby during this weather as it improves your baby’s circulation and the massage oil penetrates dry skin to keep it soft and supple. Simply ensure that the room is at a cozy temperature when you massage your baby so that they don’t feel cold. You can massage excessively dry skin even 2-3 times a day.
