An Honest First-time Mom Experience

Featuring @spreading.bliss

The early months of motherhood are tender, overwhelming, and deeply transformative. In this edition of Voice of Moms, we speak to a first-time mother Lovisha Parischa navigating life with her 7 months old baby girl. Born in Karnal, Haryana, and now living in Delhi after marriage, Lovisha carries forward the softness and kindness she learnt from her own mother. As for her own journey of motherhood, she is choosing to trust her love and instinct to guide her in the right direction.

How did your upbringing shape the kind of mother you imagined you would be?

My mother has always been very kind and soft towards me, and I am determined to follow the same approach with my daughter. I am going with the flow and just trying my best to become a better mother with each passing day.

What was the biggest emotional shift you experienced after the birth of your daughter?

The only emotional shift I experienced was when people began to judge my actions. However, I never stressed about it. I always trusted my gut feeling and did what I felt was right. For any concern, I always consulted my doctor.

What surprised you the most about yourself during the first few months of motherhood?

The first few months were definitely overwhelming, and I even regret parts of it now. I couldn’t click many memories of my daughter during that phase because I myself was weak. Now I realize she is growing too fast, and the newborn phase is just so special.

What are you discovering about your baby as she inches closer to the Big One?

Not one, but many changes. A few days back she got her first tooth, and since then she wants to eat everything in front of her. I have to be very cautious now. Her curiosity is increasing day-by-day. She has started making adorable little faces, and it is beautiful to witness.

How has your relationship with your body, rest, and time changed since becoming a mom?

There is no proper rest or sleep cycle for new moms, and I have accepted this change happily. If I complain about it, it only feels harder. So instead, whenever she wakes me up in the middle of the night, I adore her and keep kissing her. It makes our bond stronger. As for physical changes, I had a normal delivery. The tough period was the initial few days after she was born, but I feel absolutely fine now.

As a first-time mom, what was the hardest part of the newborn phase that no one prepared you for?

The hardest part was breastfeeding. It was completely new for me and my body. Sitting for long hours felt monotonous at first. But once your baby starts looking at you while breastfeeding and holding your hand, there is no more beautiful feeling than that.

There is so much advice given to new mothers. How did you learn to filter out the noise?

Don’t follow what everybody else says. Just go with your heart. You can even use ChatGPT instead of taking advice from random people. Trust reliable sources and your own instincts more than outside noise.

How do you read your baby’s cues?

If you are spending your whole day and night with your baby, you learn naturally. Every baby is different. You understand their routine and cues with time. I know when she is hungry and when she needs a diaper change. It is not something that can be taught. It comes with experience.

What does a “good day” with your baby look like right now?

A good day for me is whenever she is in a happy mood and gives me giggles. Seeing her laugh is the most beautiful feeling.

When exhaustion or self-doubt creeps in, what helps you get through the day?

A good movie or show with a bowl of spicy noodles calms me down.

How has motherhood reshaped your idea of strength, patience, or love?

Motherhood has made me a better version of myself. I no longer care about parties or anything else. All I want is to be at home with my daughter and husband. In the end, your small family is what truly matters.

As a mom to a baby girl, what emotions come up when you think about raising her in today’s world?

I am already scared of the chaos in the world. I want her to grow up to be strong as well as kind. I want to teach her humanity, strength, kindness, and the zeal to complete what she starts. I also want to keep her away from screens as much as possible.

If you could go back and tell your just-postpartum self one thing, what would it be?

Take care of yourself as much as you take care of your child. Your body is equally important.

What would you want another first-time mom reading this to know?

Look at your baby and the innocence in their eyes. You may feel like you are nothing to anybody else, but you are everything to that little human. Keep yourself positive and happy if you want your baby to feel that happiness. Mindset plays a huge role in motherhood, and you are your baby’s first teacher.

The early months of motherhood are not about perfection. They are about instinct, learning, and showing up every single day with love. This story reminds us that when the world gets loud with opinions, a mother’s intuition often knows best. In the quiet moments of midnight cuddles and tiny giggles, bonds are built that last a lifetime.
