Growing With My Daughter: A Mother’s Honest Journey Through the Toddler Years

Motherhood often changes us in ways we never expect. It softens us, stretches our patience, and quietly reshapes the way we see the world. For Alisha Singh, the journey of raising her two-year-old daughter has been exactly that, a constant process of learning, unlearning, and growing alongside her child.

Born and brought up in Delhi and now living in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, Alisha describes how the shift from a fast-paced city to a quieter hill town has influenced the way she approaches parenting. The warmth and rootedness of her own upbringing continue to guide her, while the calm simplicity of her current surroundings has helped her embrace gentler, more conscious parenting.

In this honest conversation, Alisha opens up about the emotional layers of raising a toddler girl, navigating mom guilt, rediscovering her own identity, and learning to find meaning in the everyday chaos of motherhood.

Two years into motherhood, what has surprised you the most about yourself?

I’m surprised by how much I’ve grown. Motherhood has made me more patient, more intentional, and more protective of my time and energy. I’ve learned to prioritize what truly matters.

Toddlers are expressive and strong-willed. What part of her personality has challenged you the most and helped you grow?

Her independence has made me grow the most. Letting go a little, giving her space to try and sometimes fail has taught me to trust her and trust myself more.

Have you ever felt overstimulated or exhausted and then guilty for feeling that way? How did you learn to accept those emotions?

Yes, there have been many moments when I felt completely overstimulated or exhausted, and then immediately guilty because I thought I should be more patient or more grateful.

What I’ve learned is that two things can be true at once: I can love my child deeply and still need a moment for myself.

What feels heavier or more intentional for you when raising a girl?

I want her to know she can be both soft and strong. Raising a girl feels intentional because I’m constantly balancing nurturing her heart while also teaching her resilience.

That “heaviness” comes from love, the awareness that you’re shaping someone who will one day walk through the world on her own.

Has becoming a mother changed how you see your own mother and childhood?

Yes, definitely. I have much more empathy for my mother now. I finally understand the things she used to say when we were kids. Her sacrifices feel heavier and more meaningful.

I’m still learning from her, though I also want to do some things differently because every mother and every child is different. My relationship with my mother has changed with deeper gratitude.

What does a difficult day look like at home, and how do you reset without carrying guilt into the next day?

A difficult day doesn’t look dramatic from the outside. It looks ordinary, just heavier.

It’s being in the kitchen trying to cook while she cries at my feet. It’s preparing meals with love and watching them get rejected.

What helps me reset is reminding myself not to give up. Tomorrow is another chance, and that mindset keeps me from carrying guilt into the next day.

Have you ever felt like you were losing parts of your identity? How did you reclaim pieces of yourself?

Yes, there were quiet moments when I thought, “Where did I go?”

Motherhood can blur your identity. Your name becomes “Mom.” Your schedule revolves around someone else.

Reclaiming myself happened in small ways, night walks alone, watching movies again, going out with friends, doing the little things I enjoy.

It’s not about stepping away from your child. It’s about stepping back into yourself so you can show up fuller.

What moment made you realize your daughter is already observing and learning from you?

The first time her doll “fell,” she gently patted it and said, “It’s okay, don’t cry,” in my exact tone.

That moment hit me. She’s watching how I speak, what I do, and how I react.

When she throws a tantrum or resists you, what do you remind yourself in that moment?

I remind myself that she’s not giving me a hard time, she’s having a hard time. Self-doubt still comes in: Am I too strict? Too soft? But when she melts into my arms after crying, I remember she needs me.

When you see her sleeping peacefully after a long chaotic day, what truth about motherhood settles in your heart?

It was all worth it. The mess. The noise. The patience I had to dig for. One day the chaos will be gone, and I’ll miss the very things that once exhausted me.

The Quiet Lessons Motherhood Teaches

Alisha’s story is a reminder that motherhood rarely looks perfect from the outside. It is built in ordinary moments, in messy kitchens, rejected meals, late-night reflections, and the quiet realization that our children are always watching how we love, speak, and respond.

Raising a toddler is not only about teaching a child how to grow. It is also about learning how to grow as a mother. Through patience, self-awareness, and compassion for ourselves, we slowly build the emotional world our children will grow up in.

For Alisha, that world is one where her daughter feels safe, loved, and free to be both gentle and strong.
