Your pregnancy is one of the most exciting times in your life. And you’ll want to stay as healthy as possible for yourself and your baby. In addition to maintaining a nutrient-dense diet, staying active while pregnant is also very vital.
But is it safe to exercise throughout your pregnancy? What should your workouts look like? Are there specific exercises you should avoid? Let’s find out!
Most exercises are safe during a normal pregnancy, as long as you take certain precautions. (An exception to this is cases where you are advised by your doctor not to exercise due to certain pregnancy complications) However, to protect your health and to eliminate unnecessary risks to your developing baby, certain activities are not advised. Here’s a list of activities that you should try to avoid during pregnancy.
Since the body undergoes several physical changes during pregnancy, it is necessary to choose activities that are in sync with these changes. One simple rule to follow: You must feel comfortable while doing any exercise. If you experience fatigue, dizziness, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, pack in back or pelvis, it is advisable to immediately stop and rest.
Always talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

When you're pregnant, it can be hard to get a good night’s sleep. Many soon-to-be moms are often surprised how difficult it is to get proper rest during their pregnancy
Especially when you’re looking to get all the rest you need (before baby arrives), your sleep isn’t sound and refreshing as usual, and you’ll wake more often throughout the night. As your pregnancy progresses, it actually gets tougher to find a comfortable sleeping position.
So, what can you do to encourage some quality sleep during your pregnancy?
Here are our top 5 tips to help you get as much sleep as possible during pregnancy, so you are well rested and ready when your baby arrives.
Your body goes through a lot of changes while you are growing your little one. Changes in hormones can make you exhausted, irritable and nauseous. A lot of pregnant women face extreme tiredness during their first trimester. It’s extremely important to get more sleep while you are expecting. Try squeezing in a 20-minute power nap during the day if possible. Something this easy can leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Establish a soothing and comforting bedtime routine to help you relax and drift off to sleep more easily. Try a few soothing practices to help you wind down before bed.
Caffeine slightly increases your blood pressure and heart rate as also the amount of urine your body makes. Too much caffeine can actually impact the onset of sleep & reduce the number of hours you sleep. If you do have caffeine, make sure it is at least 10-12 hours before bedtime.
Try experimenting with pregnancy pillows to find a comfortable sleeping position. There are various shapes and sizes of pregnancy pillows that help expecting moms sleep comfortably through the night.
These pillows offer great support for your entire body and help in improving your blood circulation as well. Many prefer to place a pillow under their abdomen or between their legs. A pregnancy pillow can make a tremendous difference and is a must have for any expectant mama hoping to have a sound, uninterrupted, pain free sleep.
It is a known fact that regular physical activity during pregnancy helps you fall asleep more easily. While many pregnant women report having a harder time falling asleep, those who exercise (during the day and not just before bedtime) say the quality of their sleep is better and that they wake up feeling more rested. Even a simple walk around the block or a session of stretching can lead to an improved mood and better sleep.
We’d love to know what helped you sleep better during your pregnancy. Share your pregnancy experiences with us in the comments below.

]]>Thanks to surging hormones, you’ll most likely notice a bunch of skin changes that take place during your pregnancy. However, the kind of skin changes that pregnant women experience vary from one person to another, and can include anything right from acne breakouts to stretch marks, pigmentation, skin discoloration, excessive dryness or the much-talked-about pregnancy glow.
The good news? You don’t need to completely overhaul your skincare routine. In fact, you get to do just the opposite. Choose clean, gentle skincare products during your pregnancy and keep it simple! Here are some pregnancy skincare tips that experts recommend, and Moms swear by!
1. Stay well-hydrated
Flush out those toxins and keep your skin nourished from the inside by drinking lots of water and eating foods with high water content.
2. Gentle cleansing routine
A lot of women get pregnancy acne, especially during the first trimester as your oil-secreting glands tend to go into overdrive due to changing hormones. The key to dealing with this is to adopt a very gentle and regular cleansing routine to keep the oil in check and to prevent acne from flaring up. Use a mild, soap-free cleanser to wash your face twice or thrice a day. Do not over-cleanse or pick at your skin. Your skin can be extremely sensitive during pregnancy, so try to keep your cleansing routine extremely gentle. Our Naturally Soft Skin Cream Bar Soap and Naturally Smooth Skin Cream Bar Soap are both safe, hypoallergenic and enriched with natural crème oils to gently cleanse your skin and leave it soft & smooth. Wash your pillowcases and towels often as well to prevent transfer of grime on to your skin.
3. Moisturize as often as needed
During pregnancy, your skin can become pretty dry & itchy. Moisturize from top to toe as often as necessary to keep your stretching skin soft and supple. Try our 3-step Mama Skincare Kit that was specially formulated for pregnant Mummas. This pregnancy skincare kit contains 3 skin moisturizing & nourishing essentials that are enriched with vitamin-packed natural oils & butters. 4. Get your hands on an effective Stretch Mark treatment
You might not be able to avoid stretch marks, but you can help reduce their appearance. Keep up your moisturizing routine and massage your skin daily with a stretch mark oil like Softsens Skin Therapy Oil. Pamper and protect your skin with this nourishing formula that works to lessen damage caused by stretching skin. Enriched with natural oils of jojoba, avocado & rosehip, Softsens Skin Therapy Oil works to reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, fine lines & uneven skin tone. This lightweight, non-greasy, vegan formula spreads easily and absorbs quickly, deeply moisturizing dry, itchy skin. 5. Try and get enough sleep
A good night’s sleep can be hard to come by when you’re pregnant, especially towards the second half of your pregnancy. But, getting enough zzz’s can do wonders for your skin, and leaving it feeling and looking a lot healthier.
6. Protect your skin from hyperpigmentation
Rising levels of estrogen & progesterone during pregnancy stimulate the production of melanin in your skin, leading to hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration. Sun damage can make these skin changes even more apparent and pronounced. You can help protect your skin and reduce the appearance of these skin changes by making sure you wear sunscreen daily. Pick a gentle mineral-based sun protection product like the Softsens SPF30 Sunblock Lotion that not only protects skin from sun damage but also moisturizes it deeply. Our sunblock lotion is enriched with Vitamin E, avocado & carrot extracts to protect and moisturize skin, along with powerful Zinc Oxide that acts as a protective barrier between skin and the sun’s rays. This mildly-formulated sunblock is perfect for both Moms and babies. Our 3-step Mama Skincare Kit is also designed with naturally-enriched products that are formulated to fight hyperpigmentation.
7. Keep your makeup routine as simple as possible
Your skin will be far more sensitive during pregnancy, and possibly prone to breakouts as well. Stick to a simple makeup routine and let your pores breathe as much as possible. If your skin is excessively oily, choose oil-free, non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic makeup. Always take off any makeup thoroughly before you go to sleep.
8. Pay attention to the ingredients in your skincare products
Anything that you apply on your skin does get absorbed by your skin to a certain extent. That’s why it’s really important to be careful about what you put on your skin during your pregnancy. Experts recommend avoiding any products that contain parabens, phthalates, SLS, SLES, formaldehyde, benzoyl peroxide, retinol, or salicylic acid.

1. Continue taking your prenatal vitamins
Keep taking your prenatal vitamins throughout your pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins contain essential vitamins & minerals, including ‘folic acid’, which is vital for the health and development of the foetus. It is advisable to start taking these supplements even before you conceive because your baby’s neural cord actually develops within the first few weeks of your pregnancy.
2. Try and maintain a positive state of mind
It’s absolutely normal to feel anxious during your pregnancy. The current COVID-19 situation too can add to this. Try and stay positive by practicing yoga regularly, watching calming videos or listening to soothing music. Avoid reading or listening to news that makes you more anxious and talk to your family and friends whenever you feel stressed or depressed, instead of bottling it up inside. In addition to all the health tips for pregnant women outlined in this article, try and practice relaxation or breathing techniques on a daily basis to help quell your anxiety. Breathing exercises can also be really helpful in preparing you for childbirth. If you feel overly anxious or depressed, speak to your doctor about this and get proper support. Both pre and post-partum depression are real and can take a toll on your mental health. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and support when needed. Here are our 10 Anxiety-relieving Tips for Pregnant Women.
3. Be aware of what kind of foods you should eat during pregnancy and what foods to avoid during your pregnancy
A well-balanced diet with 5-6 smaller meals through the day is ideal for a healthy pregnancy. Try your best to stick to freshly cooked foods and stay away from heavy, processed foods. Focus on eating foods that are rich in folate, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin B12 as these nutrients support the healthy growth of the foetus. Check out our Top 5 Superfoods for Pregnant Women here. If you’re looking for snack ideas, we’ve also put together 3 Healthy & Delicious Snack Ideas for Pregnant Women.
There are also certain foods that you should avoid during pregnancy. These include:
o High-mercury fish such as swordfish, shark, tilefish, king mackerel
(Fish that is low in mercury such as salmon, shrimp, catfish, are actually good for pregnant women (in moderate amounts) as they are a great source of Omega3 which is crucial for your baby’s brain development)
o Raw or undercooked fish, meat or eggs
o Raw sprouts
o Raw, unpasteurized milk and cheeses (like brie, camembert and other soft cheese)
o Unpasteurized fruit juices
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, make sure to thoroughly wash and peel them to avoid any infection through contamination and cook them well. While pregnant women can drink caffeine, it is advisable to limit the amount of caffeine to no more than 200 mgs on a daily basis. Organ meat such as liver, too, should be consumed only in limited amounts.
4. Exercise regularly and focus on strengthening your pelvic floor muscles
Keeping up with a moderate exercise routine is an important part of pregnancy care. You could even discuss this with your doctor beforehand, especially if you have a complicated pregnancy. Exercising regularly can help keep you from gaining excessive weight during pregnancy, promote better sleep, strengthen your muscles, can help release feel-good endorphins, and helps prepare your body for childbirth. Make sure you include specific exercises that can help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, as this is not only helpful during labour, but even while your body is healing after your delivery. Before sleeping at night, do some light stretches to help prevent leg cramps. Here are 4 Safe Exercises for pregnant women that you can try at home.
5. Say no to harmful toxins
For a safe and healthy pregnancy, avoid alcohol, tobacco and any kind of illegal drug use. These have been linked to cases of miscarriage, premature birth weight and so on. If you need help navigating this, speak to your doctor for advice and support.
6. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day
Increase your water intake considerably during your pregnancy. This might mean more trips to the bathroom, but it also helps with a healthy pregnancy and reduces certain unwanted pregnancy side effects such as constipation, hemorrhoids, headaches, fatigue and/or swellings.
7. Take care of your changing skin
You’ve probably heard that stretch marks are quite common during pregnancy, but do you also know what other skin changes you should look out for during pregnancy? 8. Prepare and educate yourself on the different aspects of pregnancy, birth and baby care
Preparing yourself for what’s to come will not only help relieve a lot of your anxiety, but also help you deal with your pregnancy and childbirth better. Read books with childbirth and pregnancy tips & advice, look up different birth stories (both positive and negative). Here are 10 helpful books to read while you’re pregnant. Prepare a birth plan for yourself along with your doctor. If possible, take a breastfeeding class or a child birthing class, where you’ll not only gain valuable information but also get the chance to meet other expecting mothers. Getting a head start on shopping for baby essentials can also help lessen some of your stress towards the end of your pregnancy. Here’s a Printable Checklist of all your Newborn Baby Essentials.
9. Yay! Take these chores off your list
There are certain chores that can be harmful during your pregnancy. Here’s what not to do when you get pregnant.
o Most kitchen and bathroom cleaning supplies contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to you during your pregnancy. Stay away from products with harsh chemicals.
o If you have a cat, let your partner take over changing out the kitty litter. Cat litter can contain a parasite that is harmful to pregnant women
o Avoid lifting heavy objects or standing on a step stool or ladder, especially during the latter half of your pregnancy as your center of gravity shifts a little during pregnancy
o Avoid standing on your feet for prolonged periods of time. Try and take breaks to put your feet up and sit. Try to even avoid standing by a hot cooktop for too long.
o Constant bending could also affect your back and may cause nerve pain so try and avoid chores that involve a lot of bending
10. Check with your doctor before taking over-the-counter medication
There are certain medications that should be avoided or taken in limited quantities to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy. So, make sure you run it by your doctor before taking any different medication.
11. Make sure that you’re gaining weight at a healthy rate
Weight gain is a natural part of the pregnancy process. However, it is important to make sure that you’re gaining the right amount of weight to support the healthy growth and development of the foetus. Your doctor should be able to provide you with a chart for the same, and will track your weight at every appointment.
12. Avoid entering hot tubs and saunas
Sitting in a hot tub or a sauna can raise your body temperature to over 101 degrees F, which can be harmful for your baby, especially early on in your pregnancy. Avoid exposure to higher temperatures. This is an important pregnancy care tip. Additionally, you also tend to get dehydrated or dizzy easily when you’re pregnant.
13. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
Did you know that some pregnant mothers actually notice an increase in their shoe size during pregnancy? While this may or may not happen to you, swollen feet and ankles is also fairly common, making it rather uncomfortable to fit into your regular shoes. Buy a pair of comfortable shoes to wear during your pregnancy and pull out all your comfy clothing as well.
14. Always wear sunblock lotion
During pregnancy, your skin is actually more sensitive and thus more vulnerable to sun damage. A lot of pregnant moms also notice darkening of skin, hyperpigmentation or dark spots on their face, known as ‘melasma’. Protect your skin as much as possible by using a sunblock lotion such as the Softsens SPF30 Sunblock lotion for moms & babies. Made from powerful natural ingredients and zinc oxide, it sits atop your skin to create a protective barrier against sun damage. It also nourishes and moisturizes your skin, leaving it soft, smooth and healthy.
15. Wash your hands regularly to keep away any infections
While frequent handwashing is a must whether you’re pregnant or not, it’s even more important during pregnancy to prevent any communicable infections that could possibly harm the foetus.
16. Travel at the right time
Experts recommend that the best time for airline travel during your pregnancy is usually between 14-28 weeks. This is typically a good time because most pregnant moms are past the morning sickness stage, and you still have a while to go for delivery. However, make sure you do check with your doctor before making any travel plans, so that they can evaluate your personal case and clear you for travel.
17. Find a new-mom support group
Once the baby gets here (and even before), you’re going to have a million and one questions, no matter how many books you’ve read, or how prepared you are (and that’s okay)! While your doctor should be able to address most of your queries, it helps greatly to have a support group of new moms who are experiencing the highs and lows of motherhood at the same time. Try and make friends with new/expecting moms in your neighborhood or you could even join an online mommy forum.
18. Be watchful of the signs you need to look out for in case you have to call the doctor
What are normal pregnancy symptoms and what aren’t? Speak to your doctor about this so that you can be prepared in case you need to call the doctor in case of any emergency. Typically, some instances in which you must call your doctor are: vaginal bleeding, pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, amongst others. However, if you do feel like something is not right, don’t hesitate in calling your doctor and checking out the issue.

We’ve all heard of the wonderful ‘pregnancy glow’ that women get when they’re expecting a baby. But did you know that your skin can go through all kinds of other changes when you are pregnant? Here are some of the commonly-seen skin changes that women experience during pregnancy.
1. STRETCH MARKS
One of the most evident skin changes that women notice during pregnancy are stretch marks. They appear in the form of pink, white or red lines across the skin. In the case of pregnant women, stretch marks normally appear on and around the abdomen, breasts, buttocks and/or thighs. While these stretch marks are partly caused due to stretching of the skin tissue during pregnancy, your genes also play a role in the appearance of stretch marks. So, if your mom had them during her pregnancy, the chances are higher that you will too. Rapid weight gain during pregnancy can also contribute to stretch marks. Obviously, this is unavoidable as you’re growing a little baby, but you can make healthier food choices so that you put on weight at a steady pace through your pregnancy.
Remedies: A lot of people ask – what is the best way to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy and how do you get rid of stretch marks after pregnancy? While you can’t completely prevent them from appearing, you can help lessen and lighten their appearance. The great thing about stretch marks is that they will eventually become a lot lighter over time and you will barely even notice them. But here are some things you can do to prevent or reduce the appearance of these lines: Massage your skin with a pregnancy stretch mark oil at least twice a day, if not more. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – our nourishing Body Butter is perfect for keeping your skin deeply moisturized, soft and supple, as it stretches and grows. Check out our pregnancy-safe 3 step skincare routine to help reduce and lighten the appearance of stretch marks. Click here to shop our 3-step Mama Skincare Kit. Avoid hot showers that tend to dry out skin. Drink lots of water.
Our advice: Wear your stretch marks with pride, Mumma. Your body is working to create a tiny miracle. They’re not stretch marks, they’re the tigress stripes that you earned.
2. DRY, SENSITIVE AND ITCHY SKIN
Stretching of the skin and loss of skin elasticity during pregnancy can lead to dryness and itchiness all over your body, including your face and neck, and especially your abdomen region. Changing hormones also lead to a lot of skin sensitivity. These are effects of pregnancy which will wear off after you have your baby.
During the last trimester, some women may experience a great deal of itching, particularly on their hands and feet, along with other symptoms such as nausea and fatigue. This could possibly be a case of ‘cholestasis’, a condition connected to the liver. If the symptoms persist, consult your healthcare provider to help treat the issue.
Remedies: Treat dry skin by moisturizing regularly, and staying hydrated from the inside. Avoid harsh products that can dry out your skin even further and switch to gentle skin cleansers, without any added fragrances. Nourish your skin from deep within with a heavy moisturizer like our Nourishing Body Butter that is made from 95% natural-origin ingredients that is completely safe for pregnant women. Make sure you wear a mineral-based sunblock lotion daily to protect your skin which is super-sensitive during this time. Chlorinated water can further dry out skin, so try and skip visits to the swimming pool if you’re suffering from excessively dry skin. Leave a humidifier in your bedroom at night-time to draw moisture to your skin.
3. DARKENING OF SKIN
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to hyperpigmentation or simply put, darkening of your skin tone. This pregnancy pigmentation is usually more prominent in certain areas such as your face, hands, feet, underarms and thighs. While it may seem worrisome, don’t fret. Your skin tone will slowly go back to normal after your pregnancy, and for some women, after you finish breastfeeding.
Some women may also notice dark spots on their face, mostly on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. This is known as ‘melasma’ or the ‘mask of pregnancy’ and is caused by excessive production of melanin that leads to hyperpigmentation. Thus, you might also notice already existing moles and freckles getting darker than before. The area around your nipples (areola) also tends to become darker. Many women might also develop a dark long line extending from under the navel going straight down to the pubic bone. This is called a ‘linea nigra’ and is very common during pregnancy. For most women, this line fades a couple of months after their delivery.
Remedies: While you cannot prevent pregnancy pigmentation from occurring, you can help reduce the effect. ALWAYS wear sunblock, whether you are indoors or outdoors. Exposure to the sun’s rays can further stimulate skin pigmentation. When outdoors, try and protect yourself from the sun’s rays by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and appropriate clothing. Make sure you continue taking your pre-natal vitamins that are a good source of folic acid which can help combat pregnancy pigmentation. Our 3-step pregnancy skincare routine is also specially designed with naturally-enriched products that help prevent darkening of skin and spots.
4. PREGNANCY GLOW
You’ve probably wondered why some pregnant women look like they’re glowing. It’s simple, really. During pregnancy, there is an increase in blood circulation through your body. This is what gives your face a flushed, radiant look. Hormonal changes also lead to an increase in oil secretion, giving your skin a slight sheen. Isn’t that amazing, ladies?
5. ACNE AND BREAKOUTS
While excessive secretion of oil can add to your pregnancy glow, it can also lead to acne and regular breakouts, especially for those with acne-prone skin.
Remedies: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, always remove makeup properly, use a natural skin toner to get rid of excess oils and try and stick to a healthier diet. Stay away from any retinol-based products during your pregnancy. Instead, use natural acne-fighting ingredients like aloe vera gel, tea tree oil, honey etc as topical treatments.
6. VARICOSE VEINS AND SPIDER VEINS
Varicose veins are dark blue or purple thick veins that can be seen on one’s legs. They appear not only because of increased pressure and weight on the legs during pregnancy, but also due to increase in blood circulation, and can be quite painful.
Like the name suggests, spider veins are spidery-looking red veins that appear on one’s face, neck, chest, arms, legs or ankles during pregnancy. This also happens due to increase in blood circulation. The good news is that they fade soon after delivery.
Remedies: Varicose veins can be quite painful if not treated properly. Speak to your healthcare practitioner regarding this issue. If you have varicose veins, make sure you avoid sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Walk as much as you can. If you are in a sitting position, put your feet up and sit comfortably.
Tell us – what kind of skin changes did you experience while you were pregnant and how did you treat them?
]]>A lot changes when you learn you’re pregnant. You become hyper focused on what you are eating and drinking, to make sure that your tiny one is getting all the nutrition they need. The same applies for your skincare regime. There are three main reasons why you need to adjust your skincare routine a little during pregnancy.
(1) Certain skincare products can contain ingredients that are harmful to the developing fetus. So, it’s a good time to take a closer look at your skincare products and make sure that they’re completely safe to use during pregnancy.
(2) Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause your skin to become extra sensitive and prone to flare ups. Switching to a gentler and cleaner skincare routine during pregnancy can help care for your skin at this time.

Dear Moms, while you grow your tiny bundle of joy in your belly, your body changes in miraculous ways to make way for your little one. As your belly expands, your skin too stretches, grows and loses elasticity, which can lead to dryness, itchiness and stretch marks during pregnancy. It’s really important to give your skin lots of extra love & care during this time, and the truth is you need something MORE than a regular moisturizer to help reduce stretch marks, combat dryness and help nourish your changing skin.
So, we designed a product that would meet the excessive moisturizing needs of your skin during pregnancy, one that can be safely used on your sensitive skin all through your pregnancy and beyond.
Meet the NEW Softsens Nourishing Body Butter – a lusciously rich body butter made from 95% natural origin ingredients and designed especially for pregnant women.
Our dermatologist-approved body butter is a blend of 9 natural essential seed oils & butters, and is designed to deeply moisturize dry, itchy & stretch-mark prone skin, and provide 24-hour moisturization, thus enhancing skin elasticity & combating your pregnancy skin woes.
You’re probably wondering what makes body butter better than regular lotions or creams when it comes to moisturizing and nourishing your skin. So, let’s look at some of the differences between body butter, and body lotions & creams.
• Body butter is thicker than both lotions and creams, making it extremely nourishing for your skin.
• Lotions and creams contain more water and less fats and are typically lighter in formulation. Body butters have very little water content and more butters and oils, that seep into the deeper layers of your skin, sealing in moisture for much longer.
• Regular body lotions and creams consist of emollients that hydrate & nourish the skin but may NOT necessarily be equipped to deal with the excessive moisturizing needs of your dry, itchy, stretching skin during pregnancy. Body butter contains essential fats that provide faster, better relief for dry skin.
Using a combination of your regular moisturizer along with a body butter is a great way to keep your skin healthy and nourished all through your pregnancy. Check out our 3-step Mama Skincare kit that was designed to help your skin get all the care and nutrients it needs all day long.
While our Body Butter was designed especially for pregnant women, it is also PERFECT for those who aren’t pregnant yet but looking to moisturize dry, itchy skin or lighten the appearance of stretch marks and scars.
Our specially-designed pregnancy body butter is formulated to combat all your common pregnancy skin woes. Here are some of the benefits of using our body butter during pregnancy.
1. Helps lighten and prevent stretch marks
Softsens Body Butter is a well-balanced combination of 9 natural butters & oils like shea butter & cocoa butter that boost collagen formation & nourish the skin cells to keep them moisturized. The butters ensure that the skin cells get all the required vitamins & minerals that boost skin elasticity and prevent the skin from drying up. The natural oils work as carriers to ensure that these vitamins & minerals are deposited into the deep layers of the skin to ensure complete nourishment, and thus reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars and dark spots.
2. Prevents and soothes dry, itchy cracked skin
Body butter is perfect for those with dry skin. With added nutrients & vitamins, our body butter helps boost collagen formation to improve skin elasticity and nourish the skin cells from deep within. It also forms a protective barrier over the skin to hold in moisture for a longer duration which in turn prevents dry skin & itchiness.
3. Helps combat hyperpigmentation, slows skin aging and enhances skin tone
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to hyperpigmentation or darkening of your skin tone. Our body butter also works to combat hyperpigmentation and help enhance your skin tone. It is specially designed with ingredients like mango butter & kokum butter that protect skin against UV damage and environmental pollution, thus preventing fine lines and dark spots.

PDF10 Tips to Help Tighten Loose Skin Post Pregnancy
]]>During pregnancy, weight gain and an expanding belly causes your skin to stretch, thus damaging skin elasticity and leading to loose, sagging skin post pregnancy. For many new moms, it can be hard to come to terms with these changes in their skin and body, and it can even negatively affect their self-confidence and mental well-being. It’s important to remind yourself that these changes are absolutely normal and that your body and skin need time to heal and recover. However, there are lots of ways in which you can help your skin and body heal after pregnancy.
Here are some helpful tips to help tighten loose skin post pregnancy.
1. Care for your skin properly during pregnancy too
Stretch marks and skin changes during pregnancy are unavoidable. But preventing skin damage as far as possible during your pregnancy period can be extremely helpful in the long run.
Lessen the damage caused by stretching skin during pregnancy by massaging your skin daily with a specially-formulated stretch mark oil such as the Softsens Skin Therapy Oil that boosts skin elasticity and helps improve the appearance of stretch marks, skin spots, scars, uneven skin tone and premature ageing. With vitamin-packed natural oils like jojoba, avocado and rosehip, it nourishes and conditions the skin from deep within.
2. Stay away from crash diets and go slow with exercise
It might be tempting to go on a crash diet to lose those extra pounds, but it can actually have a negative impact not just on your health but on your skin as well. Dropping weight too quickly can cause your skin to sag even further. Your body also needs essential nutrients to help regenerate skin cells, so it’simportantto eat a balanced diet at this time. Similarly, too much exercise all of a sudden can stress your body and adversely impact your health. Although it will take longer to lose your pregnancy weight, it is important to lose it in a healthy manner. This is also a more sustainable weight loss plan and will allow your body to heal slowly.
3. Start a consistent cardio routine mixed with a little strength training
To tighten loose skin after pregnancy, the type of exercise that you do is more important than how much you exercise at this time. Start off with a slow and consistent cardio routine and pair it with light strength training a few times a week. You could try doing alternate days of cardio and strength training on weekdays and give your body a break over the weekend. By doing this, you will slowly burn fat and gain muscle mass which will help firm up your loose skin over time. While this is a slow & steady process, you will notice gradual results over time. With any exercise, always get a go-ahead from your doctor first.
4. Increase your skin’s elasticity by drinking lots of water
Keeping yourself well-hydrated is so important for boosting your skin’s elasticity. Ideally, you should drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Hydrating from the inside is not just great for your skin, but also helps reduce bloating, helps your body burn fat and has lots of other great benefits.
5. Massage skin with skin-nourishing natural oils
A regular massage with skin nourishing natural oils can actually help boost blood circulation, smoothen skin and leave it feeling a lot more nourished and healthy. Focus mostly on the stomach, hips, thighs, bottoms, breasts and upper arms. Softsens Skin Therapy Oil is a unique blend of natural oils designed to completely nourish your skin. It has Avocado oil that helps promote collagen production and retain skin elasticity; Rosehip seed oil that works to fade stretch marks, fine lines, skin pigmentation; and Jojoba seed oil that contains fatty acids and vitamins that help in skin cell regeneration.
6. Include collagen-boosting foods in your diet
Collagen is a protein in your body that’s largely responsible for the elasticity and smoothness of your skin. Eating a collagen-rich diet can help improve your skin’s firmness and overall health. Here are some collagen-boosting foods to include in your diet: bone broth, chicken, fish, egg whites, citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, tomatoes, beans, cashews, garlic, leafy greens, kiwis, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds.
7. Limit your intake of sugar and caffeine
Loading up on multiple cups of coffee and sugary treats can be tempting and easy especially when you’re sleep-deprived and tired. But limiting your intake of these ingredients can have far better effects on your skin and body, helping you look and feel better.
8. Moisturize skin daily and exfoliate once a week
Help maintain and boost your skin’s elasticity by moisturizing daily from top to toe with a deep-hydrating moisturizer. Softsens Moisturizing Body Sorbet is an ultra-light & refreshing moisturizer designed to help give you softer, smoother, healthier skin. It is packed with oils of almond, wheat germ, olive and mango butter that are rich in vitamins A, D & E, to help reduce skin damage, boost collagen formation and maintain an even skin tone. In addition to moisturizing daily, exfoliate your skin once a week with a homemade scrub made of ground coffee and coconut oil.
9. Be patient and go easy on yourself
Being a new mom can be overwhelming and truth be told, exhausting. Go easy on yourself and on your body. As hard as it may seem, try and get more sleep. Sleep is when your body works to repair itself and heal. Additionally, too much stress too can have an adverse impact on your health and skin. Try simple stress-relieving activities like listening to music, meditating, and anything else you might find relaxing.
10. Celebrate and respect the changes in your body
Your body has been through some incredible changes and is capable of amazing things. You are both strong and beautiful, Mumma! Focus on taking this time to truly care for yourself, embrace the changes and nourish your body both from inside and out.

C-Sections: What to Expect, Preparation & Recovery
]]>Getting prepared for your baby’s birth, both mentally and physically, is an important part of your pregnancy journey. Whether you and your doctor have discussed having a planned C-section delivery or a vaginal delivery, it’s important to have prior knowledge and to prepare one’s self in the event your obstetrician decides to deliver the baby through a C-section. So, what happens during, before and after a C-section and what are some important things you should know? Let’s find out.
What is a C-section?
A Cesarean section, commonly known as C-section, is a surgery during which an obstetrician makes incisions in a pregnant woman’s abdomen and uterus to deliver a baby. Approximately 20-25% of babies across the globe are born via C-section. As with any other surgical procedure, there are certain risks associated with a C-section but in most cases, it is a relatively uncomplicated procedure.
When is it necessary to have a C-section?
A C-section may either be a Planned/Scheduled C-section or an Emergency/Unplanned C-section. In a planned C-section, the procedure is scheduled beforehand due to reasons such as a medical condition, baby’s size/position, mother’s age, weight and so on. In most unplanned or emergency c-sections, your obstetrician might decide to deliver the baby via C-section after you’ve gone into labor due to some kind of unforeseen change or complication such as slow labor, fetal distress, problem with the placenta, amongst others.
What to expect during a C-section?
A Cesarean delivery usually takes between 45 to 60 minutes from start to end. In the case of a planned C-section, you will be advised to fast for 6 -8 hours before the surgery. In an unplanned C-section, you might have an hour or two, or even less, before the surgery begins. In either of the two scenarios, don’t hesitate to ask the medical professionals any questions or discuss any worries you have regarding the c-section procedure.
Before the C-section surgery begins, you will be prepped, your abdomen area will be cleaned and you will be hooked up with an IV and catheter. The anesthesiologist will administer a local or general anesthesia. In most cases, you will require only local anesthesia. This will be either in the form of an epidural or spinal block. This means that you will be awake through the surgery, and a screen will be placed between your upper and lower body. If you wish to see the birth of your baby, you can discuss this with your doctor beforehand. They can then put down the screen during the birth, use a transparent screen or hold up a mirror so you can actually see your child being born. Your partner can be present in the operating room if you so wish and will be asked to stay by your side during the surgery.
During your C-section, the obstetrician will normally make two horizontal incisions across your abdomen and then your uterus. In some cases, a vertical incision may also be made but it is less common. The baby is then brought out through the incisions. In certain circumstances, your OB might let you immediately hold the baby for a few minutes before baby is whisked off for a check-up. (You can discuss this with your OB when you’re making your birth plan) Your OB will then continue to stitch up your incisions. If you desire, you can request for your baby to be brought straight to the recovery room after a checkup so that you can start breastfeeding as soon as possible and establish skin-to-skin contact. All this is entirely dependent on the mother’s wishes and how she is feeling.
Recovery after a C-section
Once you move to the recovery room, you can start nursing your baby if you’re ready, unless you’ve had general anesthesia. If you feel like you need to rest or need a bit more time, don’t stress. The nurses and doctors are there to do whatever necessary to help both you and baby feel comfortable, so make the most of this time in the hospital.
After your surgery, painkillers will be administered to you and your progress will be monitored. You will most likely be allowed to eat something once you pass gas. Once your anesthesia has worn off, your nurse will encourage you to drink lots of fluids and to try and start walking, to make sure that you don’t get any blood clots. This will also help your bowel movement. Your dressing will be removed and you will be told to keep your wound clean. In most circumstances, your hospital stay will last for 3-4 days.
Caring for yourself after a C-section
In most C-sections, your body takes at least 6 weeks to fully heal after the surgery so make sure you care for yourself well in the weeks after. You will experience some common after-effects of the c-section delivery such as pain, fatigue, tenderness, nausea and vaginal bleeding. Here are a few tips you can follow to help speed up your recovery after a C-section.
In addition, make sure to stock up on these postpartum essentials that you’ll probably require after a C-section.
Even though the recovery period for a c-section is longer than that of a vaginal delivery, you will most likely be back to normal within a few weeks. In the meantime, don’t forget to rest as much as you can, let your body heal and enjoy bonding with your newborn.
]]>How To Build a Practical & Stylish Maternity Wardrobe
]]>As your pregnancy progresses, your body will change in so many beautiful ways. You’ll soon find that you have to begin dressing to adapt to your growing bump. While this might be new to you, don’t be afraid to experiment with your style at this time. Maternity dressing is a whole lot of fun and we’re about to show you how! We put together our top tips on how you can build a stylish yet practical and comfortable maternity wardrobe. Here goes…
1. Wait a while before you start splurging on maternity clothes
Although every pregnancy is different, most women don’t notice a major change in their bodies until the beginning of the second trimester. So instead of splurging on costly maternity wear right at the beginning, wait for a while. Your body will also change shape considerably throughout the remainder of your pregnancy, so keep that in mind when buying maternity wear.
2. Evaluate your existing wardrobe to see which of your outfits also work well as maternity clothes
Spend some time sifting through your existing clothes to see what might also work well during your pregnancy and set those clothes aside to make dressing easier. Here are a few regular-sized items that can also be easily worn during pregnancy: elasticated pants, loose skirts, longer blouses, flowy items, stretchy shirts and tank tops.
3. Hang on to your elastics
Comfy maternity pants that accommodate your growing belly are an absolute essential during your pregnancy. Which basically means that anything with an elastic is your best friend at this time. Whether it’s elasticated maternity trousers, jeans or leggings, find something that works for you and can be matched with multiple items. If there’s one item that we recommend you should spend a little more on, it’s a good pair of maternity jeans. Always try them out before buying so that you get the most comfortable fit. A maternity band is also a great purchase. It can be easily worn over most clothes to help cover your belly as it grows.
4. Team tank tops or tees with loose button-down shirts
Stock up on a few tank tops or t-shirts made from stretch fabric. Wear them under a long button-down shirt. This way, you’ll still be comfortable but will also get enough coverage. Loose button-down shirts are another great maternity essential. Know a great place where you can find more of these? Your partner’s closet.
5. Layer easily by throwing on a cute jacket or oversized cardigan over any outfit
A comfy, oversized jacket or cardigan can be a great accessory during this time. Look for something in a neutral colour that will match with most of your outfits.
6. Pair loose & comfy tunic tops with leggings or jeans
Remember those old tops that you ALMOST gave away because they were too loose/flowy/shapeless? They’re the perfect pregnancy clothes. Long, loose tunic tops paired with leggings or jeans are the ideal clothes for pregnant women.
7. Choose light, breathable and stretchy fabrics
Your body temperature can fluctuate during pregnancy, often leaving you sweaty and uncomfortable. Stick to light, breathable and stretchy fabrics and stay away from synthetic materials.
8. DRESS up your baby bump
There’s a reason why most pregnant women love wearing dresses. They’re extremely comfortable, cute, versatile and allow for easy movement. While there are so many different dresses for pregnant ladies to choose from, you need to pick what makes you feel good - whether it’s a flowy maxi dress, body-hugging dress or empire waist dress. The best part is that most maternity dresses can be easily altered to your regular size after your pregnancy if need be.
9. Shop for underwear that provides maximum support and comfort
As your body grows, your breasts too will become fuller and your hips might become a little wider as well. So, make sure you stock up on comfortable maternity bras and maternity underwear that give you enough support and coverage.
10. Take good care of your feet
Comfort is key during your pregnancy, especially when it comes to footwear. The excess weight can lead to discomfort and tiredness, and a lot of women also notice swelling of their feet during pregnancy. So, try and stick to soft sneakers, low-heeled shoes, or open-toe sandals with enough support.
6 Common Bodily Changes that take Place During Pregnancy
]]>During pregnancy, your body will change in so many amazing and surprising ways to make place for and to welcome your little bundle of joy. While some changes are well-known and anticipated, there are some other bodily changes that might take you by surprise. Here’s a look atsome of themost common bodily changes that you will notice during pregnancy.
1. Skin, hair & nails
Changes in your skin are extremely common and evident during pregnancy. While some women may notice the famous ‘pregnancy glow’ that’s caused by increased blood circulation, some may have increased acne due to hormonal shifts. Stretch marks, varicose and spider veins, skin discoloration are some other changes you may notice. To learn all about skin changes during pregnancy and why they occur, click here.
Good hair days are on their way! During pregnancy, your hair might appear thicker, fuller and more lustrous. This is due to increasing levels of estrogen in the body. However, it may also lead to increase in unwanted hair in certain places such as your stomach, back, nipple area etc. After your delivery, as your estrogen drops, you might experience sudden hair loss. This is a normal postpartum occurrence. A few months after your delivery, your hair growth will most likely regularize.
Similarly, your nails will also grow faster during pregnancy but you’ll notice that they are more brittle in texture. Make sure you’re taking your pregnancy vitamins and eating a nutrient-rich pregnancy diet.
2. Swelling of Breasts
One of the earliest signs of pregnancy are changes in your breasts. As your body begins to prepare for breastfeeding, not only will your breasts increase in size several times during your pregnancy, but they will also become a lot more tender and sensitive. Make sure you wear comfortable bras that offer good support during this time. You might also notice small bumps around your nipples. As your body has already started producing breast milk even before your baby arrives, you might see a few drops of ‘colostrum’ leaking from your breast. This is also known as ‘first milk’ and it is either clear or yellowish in colour.
3. Vaginal changes
You might notice adifference inyour vaginal region as well. Due to the increase in blood flow to this area, you might notice that your vagina has a bluish tinge to it. This is perfectly normal. Due to similar reasons, your vagina might also feel thick and swollen with increased sensitivity. As your uterus grows, it can put added pressure on this area. That, along with increased blood flow and changing hormones can also cause you to develop varicose veins in the vaginal area. These will typically disappear a few weeks after your delivery. If it gives you pain and discomfort, use a warm compress on the area and sit with your legs elevated.
Vaginal discharge also becomes pretty common during this time. It is normal to see a milky white discharge more often than usual. If your discharge is yellow or greenish in colour, it may be signs of an infection and it’s best to get it checked.
Changing pH levels can also increase the possibility of vaginal infections while you’re pregnant. You might notice that the area becomes more sensitive and itchy. If you’re facing any of these issues, speak to your doctor and see if they can prescribe any medication.
4. Teeth & Gum Issues
Swelling of the gums is another common pregnancy symptom, accompanied by sensitivity and sometimes even bleeding. This is called pregnancy gingivitis. You can help avoid these issues by taking extra care of your oral health during this time. Brush and floss frequently and eat healthy foods.
Excessive throwing up due to morning sickness can contribute to the erosion of tooth enamel. Rinse your mouth often and drink lots of water. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after throwing up your food as this can worsen the erosion.
Taking good care of your dental health is very necessary during pregnancy. Don’t shy away from visiting your dentist if you notice any of these issues.
5. Growing Belly, Weight gain and Swellings
Obviously, one of the most notable changes is your growing belly. Although your waist barely expands in the first trimester, it is between 12-16 weeks that you will really notice your belly begin to pop. However, it’s okay for your belly to expand at a different pace and as long as your ultrasound is okay, don’t be too concerned about your size.
Most of your weight gain will take place in the second and third trimesters. Based on your age, height, weight and other factors, your healthcare professional should be able to tell you how much weight is healthy for you to gain during this period. A lot of your weight gain also takes place due to water retention, which is why you will notice swellings in your face, arms and legs. While water retention causes swelling in your feet and around your ankles, a lot of women also see an increase in foot size during pregnancy. A certain amount of swelling is normal, but if you notice a sudden increase in swellings, speak to your healthcare professional. To reduce discomfort caused by swellings, try to avoid standing for longer periods, keep your legs elevated while resting, eat potassium-rich foods, cut back on caffeine and sodium, wear loose, comfortable clothing and drink lots of water.
6. Stretching of joints and ligaments
As your body changes to make more room for the baby and to prepare for childbirth, it produces hormones that relax and loosen your joints and ligaments. This is why you might experience lower back pain or pain in the abdomen.
Some pregnant women are also diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This is a condition that affects your hands and takes place when your nerves are compressed due to swellings. You might feel a tingling sensation or numbness in your hands and fingers, and feel a weakening of your grip. This will most likely get better a few months after you deliver your baby. Speak to your doctor for ways to reduce the pain and discomfort.

]]>10 Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms
]]>Think you might be pregnant? For many women, the symptoms of pregnancy can begin as early as two weeks after conception. Other women may not even notice any clear symptoms. What’s interesting is that a lot of early pregnancy symptoms can be similar to those that a woman experiences right before her period is due. Of course, a home pregnancy test can help confirm your suspicions. Home pregnancy tests can show accurate results two weeks after conception but most doctors will recommend taking one after your first missed period. Alternatively, you could take a blood test for early pregnancy detection. These tests can show accurate results as early as 7-10 days after conception.
Here are some of the most common early signs of pregnancy that can help you determine if you should go ahead and take a pregnancy test.
1. Missed period
The most common indicator of pregnancy is a missed period. If your periods are usually irregular, you might want to wait a few days before taking a pregnancy test. Delayed periods might also be due to other factors such as stress or sickness. Even though most women will not get their next period once they are pregnant, some might still experience some light bleeding.
2. Spotting and cramping
Have you noticed light vaginal bleeding? This might be ‘implantation bleeding’. Implantation bleeding usually occurs around 10-14 days after conception and typically looks like a light pinkish-brown discharge. Since it usually occurs in the week before your period is due, some women might confuse it with an early period. However, implantation bleeding is very light, slightly different in colour and doesn’t last more than a couple of days at most.
You might also experience stomach cramps that are similar to those one experiences during menstruation, but a little less severe in intensity.
3. Breast sensitivity and darkening of the areola
In those early days after conception, a lot of women experience breast tenderness and sensitivity. Your breasts can feel sore or even swollen. The ‘areola’, which is the portion of skin around the nipple, also begins to darken in the case of some women. These could be signs that you are pregnant.
4. Exhaustion
Another prominent symptom of being pregnant is a constant feeling of fatigue. You might feel very tired and sleepy in those first few weeks. Try and get as much rest as possible during this time and make sure you’re eating well. Here are our ‘Top 5 Superfoods for Pregnant women’. The good news is that pregnant woman usually experience this symptom mostly in the first trimester, after which it tends to get better.
5. Nausea
In the movies, morning sickness or nausea is almost always a surefire sign of pregnancy, isn’t it? Well, there’s a good basis for it. Most women do tend to feel nauseous during the early stages of pregnancy due to fluctuating hormonal levels and other bodily changes. This can also be accompanied by severe heart burn after eating. If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms, check out this helpful blog article – 5 foods to ease morning sickness.
6. Headaches and Dizziness
A lot of women get frequent headaches during pregnancy. This takes place due to changing hormonal levels and changes in blood pressure and blood sugar levels. You may also feel dizzy or light headed. Again, this is more common during the first trimester.
7. Backaches
Back pain is a normal symptom of your pregnancy and usually increases as your baby grows due to the added weight you’re carrying. However, lower back pain soon after conception is also one of the early signs of pregnancy.
8. Mood swings
If you’re feeling overly emotional or moody, this could be due to changing hormone levels during early pregnancy. Mood swings are pretty common during the first and third trimesters.
9. Aversions towards OR cravings for certain foods
If you’ve suddenly developed a liking for a food you earlier disliked or the opposite, it’s completely normal. While this usually happens in the second trimester, some women might experience it earlier. Read this article on ‘Understanding and dealing with pregnancy cravings’ to know more.
10. Frequent urination and/or Constipation
Even in those earlier stages of pregnancy, you might experience a sudden urge to urinate more often, mainly caused by an increase in flow of blood to the kidneys. You may also find yourself constipated during this time. Try and up your intake of water and include fibrous foods in your diet.
It’s important to remember that not all women experience these symptoms. Some women may experience just a few while some may barely have any. Although most of these symptoms are absolutely normal, it is always wise to speak to your healthcare provider in case of excess pain or discomfort.
]]>7 ways to Get Pregnant Faster
]]>If you’re reading this, you probably think that the time has come to grow your family and you can’t wait to have an adorable miniature version of yourself. Congratulations, this is a huge step in itself. But, getting pregnant isn’t often an overnight process. While some couples may conceive within a month or two of trying, studies show that the average couple takes any amount of time between 6 months to 1 year to conceive a baby. Although it’s not quite possible to put a number on how long it can take you to get pregnant, please find below some useful tips that you can follow to try and speed up the process.
1. Chart out your ovulation schedule
Let’s go over the basics quickly. Most women ovulate once every month. During this time, the ovaries release a mature egg which travels through the fallopian tubes where it can survive for a period of 12-24 hours, during which it can potentially meet and be fertilized by a sperm. This is why it’s important to know your ovulation schedule once you decide you want to start trying to conceive.
For most women with a regular menstrual cycle, ovulation generally occurs sometime between day 12-16 before your first day of menstruation, but this window is different from woman to woman. A great way to find out when you’re ovulating is by using an Ovulation Prediction Kit or an Ovulation Bracelet. Try looking out for natural bodily signals that can help you figure out when you’re ovulating. One of these is an increase in cervical mucus, which is a sticky, vaginal discharge resembling raw egg whites. This usually happens in the days leading up to ovulation. If you’re still not sure about when you ovulate, talk to your doctor to try and chart out your ovulation schedule based on your menstrual cycle.
2. Have intercourse regularly during your fertile window
While you might think that having intercourse on the day of ovulation itself increases your chances of pregnancy, this is not entirely true. Have intercourse regularly throughout your fertile window, i.e. five days before you ovulate, at the time of ovulation and for two days after. Experts suggest that you are most fertile in the two days right BEFORE you ovulate. Even though your egg survives only up to 24 hours, your partner’s sperm can survive inside you for up to 6 days. Due to this, having intercourse before your egg is released can lead to successful implantation.
Another question that many couples ask is how often you should have intercourse during your fertile window. Experts recommend that you have intercourse either every day or every alternate day during this period. Having too much intercourse will not necessarily increase your chances but can decrease sperm motility for some men.
3. Quit your birth control pills a few months before trying to conceive
If you’re on birth control pills, most doctors will recommend that you stop taking the pill around three months before you begin trying to conceive. This will give you a chance to get your ovulation cycle back on track and help in balancing out hormones. However, there is a possibility to get pregnant as soon as you stop taking the pill.
4. Don’t ignore a visit to the doctor for a pre-conception checkup
For various reasons, many couples hesitate to consult a doctor before they start trying to have a baby. However, it can be extremely beneficial to go for a simple pre-conception checkup to rule out any health issues and to make sure that both you and your partner are ready to conceive successfully.
5. If you do use lubricant, make sure it is a sperm-friendly one
When you’re trying to get pregnant, try and avoid using lubricants as they can alter the pH balance of your vagina and affect sperm motility. That said, if you cannot have pleasurable intercourse without using lubricant, it’s perfectly okay. Simple make sure that you use a fertility-friendly lubricant such as PreSeed or any other clinically-recommended ones.
6. Make healthy changes to your lifestyle
Most women make a lot of healthy changes in their lifestyle during their pregnancy. But making healthier lifestyle choices is essential even while you are trying to get pregnant and can help create the right environment for your baby-to-be. Make simple changes - stop smoking, limit your alcohol and caffeine consumption, eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep at night. Start popping prenatal vitamins with folic acid at least one month before you start trying to conceive, to ensure proper development of the fetus once you get pregnant.
7. Enjoy the process
Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves and simply try and enjoy the process. Stress can have adverse effects and can interfere with your ovulation cycle. Calm your nerves and have fun!

Pregnancy is a beautiful experience, but it can also be a stressful time for the mom-to-be
]]>Pregnancy is a beautiful experience, but it can also be a stressful time for the mom-to-be. Whether it’s all the different changes going on in your body, thoughts of your upcoming delivery or even financial worries, it’s very common for pregnant women to feel anxious from time to time. This anxiousness could display itself in many ways – from sleepless nights to compulsive thoughts, headaches, inability to focus on tasks or constant worrying. If you feel that your anxiousness is getting too severe and interfering with your ability to function normally on a daily basis, it’s imperative that you speak to your doctor immediately to address this situation. High-stress levels during pregnancy have been linked to premature births and low birth weight. However, a little anxiety is normal and can be resolved with a few simple steps. Take a look at some of our favourite destressing tips for pregnant women..
1. Make sure you’re getting quality sleep
Getting enough sleep during your pregnancy is vital for keeping stress at bay. But it’s easier said than done, especially during the later stages of pregnancy. Here are some tips to help you sleep better and longer:
- Get yourself more comfortable and reduce some of the pressure on your back and stomach by using extra pillows wherever you require support.
- While it’s important to keep yourself well hydrated, try and drink less water as night-time approaches so that you don’t have to make constant trips to the bathroom at night.
- Do something soothing right before bedtime, whether it’s listening to calm music, meditating or reading a good book. Many pregnant women enjoy a glass of warm milk before bedtime to help them sleep better.
- Avoid eating spicy, heavy and fried foods for dinner. Instead, eat smaller meals throughout the day. Wait for an hour or two after you eat to go to bed.
2. Pamper yourself with a warm bath or a foot soak
There’s nothing quite as relaxing as a long, warm bath. Or soak those tired, swollen feet in a tub of warm water filled with Epsom salts and calming essential oils

]]>Are you suddenly obsessed with a food that you previously hated? Are you constantly craving for sweet treats, salty snacks or some kind of odd combination of foods? Don’t fret. A lot of pregnant women experience food cravings, which begin in the first trimester, peak in the second trimester, and then gradually decrease. So, why does this happen and can these cravings be unhealthy for you and your baby? Let’s find out all there is to know on this important topic.
Q. Why do pregnant women get food cravings?
Ans. A vast majority of pregnant women experience food cravings. A food craving is basically a strong desire to eat a certain kind of food item. According to studies, food cravings in pregnant women can be caused by dietary deficiencies. An urge to eat certain foods could simply be your body’s way of responding to nutritional deficiencies. This can be countered by making sure your body is getting the essential nutrients. But that’s not the only reason. Some experts also say that these cravings are caused due to hormonal changes. Because of hormonal changes, pregnant women have a heightened sense of smell and taste, which is why certain foods can suddenly become repulsive to them while others can become appealing.
Q. Can pregnancy cravings have an impact on you or your baby?
Ans. It’s perfectly okay to give in to your pregnancy cravings, as long as you control your portions and ensure you have a balanced diet. However, eating too much junk food during your pregnancy can lead to excessive weight gain, which can also result in gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. Ideally, pregnant women need only eat 300 extra calories a day in addition to their regular intake. So, while you can satisfy your food cravings, it’s important to pay attention to your weight as well for a healthy and easy pregnancy.
Q. How to deal with pregnancy cravings in a healthy manner?
Ans. Although it’s absolutely normal to have pregnancy cravings, if you crave for a lot of unhealthy food, here are some tips you can follow to try and decrease your cravings.
Eat a proper breakfast
Eating a wholesome breakfast canreduce your cravings to some extent and will keep you satiated for a while.
Satisfy your cravings by eating smaller portions
You don’t need to say no to your cravings. Simply curb your intake and pay attention to what you eat.
Substitute unhealthy foods with their healthy counterparts
If you feel like you’re constantly craving unhealthy food, simply substitute them with healthier options. For example: instead of regular chocolate and sweets, nibble on some dark chocolate or fill up with fruits like apples or bananas; substitute ice-cream with yoghurt; replace regular potato chips with homemade sweet potato chips.
Stock your pantry with healthy snack items
If you have healthy snack options within easy reach, it provides you with a healthier alternative the next time you get hunger pangs. Click here for some healthy snack ideas for you and your little one.
Exercise regularly
Regular exercise has been shown to suppress pregnancy cravings. It can also help lift your mood, reduce stress and help you feel great through your pregnancy. However, it is important to consult with your doctor regarding your exercise regime.
Q. Is it normal to crave non-food items?
Ans. Some pregnant women can experience cravings for non-food items such as chalk, clay, soap etc. This unusual craving is called ‘Pica’. Certain studies suggest that it is caused by a deficiency in iron. Although it happens to many women, do keep in mind that consuming non-food substances can be very harmful for you and your child. If you feel such cravings coming on, speak to your doctor so that he/she can address any nutritional deficiencies, if necessary.

]]>The feeling of carrying your child in your belly
]]>The feeling of carrying your child in your belly: Magical. The morning sickness that comes with it: Not-so-magical. A lot of women suffer from morning sickness, or should we call it by its more accurate name… “all-day sickness”. It can cause nausea and vomiting, and the effects and duration usually differ from one person to another. To help you get through this phase, we made a list of the top foods that help ease morning sickness in most women. Check them out and let us know which one works best for you.
1. Lemons
During pregnancy, your levels of estrogen go up. Estrogen is the hormone that controls our sense of smell, thus making you highly sensitive to all kinds of different odors. Lemons can be a real life-saver at this time. Try sucking on them or squeezing lemon drops in your water. Sometimes even sniffing a refreshing lemon can provide instant relief. Carry a bottle of lemon extract in your bag if you’re constantly on the move, and take a quick sniff when required.
2. Salted Crackers with Cheese
The best way to ease morning sickness is by having small snacks at short intervals through the day. An empty stomach can cause even more nausea. Furthermore, make sure you eat something as soon as you wake up. Salted crackers are a favourite with pregnant women and adding some of your favourite cheese on top can make it a pretty satisfying snack.
3. Chilled Yogurt
Cold foods can help combat constant nausea. Chill some plain or flavoured yoghurt and eat it as a snack before the hunger pangs begin. Yogurt is packed with protein and calcium and is low on fat, making it your ideal go-to snack.
4. Dry fruits & Nuts
Nuts and dry fruits, that are high in protein and rich in vitamins, are great for holding off the morning sickness. Grab a handful as a snack or carry them with you while you travel. Prunes and dates are even known for strengthening your uterus muscles.
5. Ginger Tea
Ginger is an ingredient that works wonders for your stomach and can make you feel better instantly. Grate some fresh ginger to make ginger tea or take it any other way you like.

]]>Snacking often during pregnancy is part of the deal.
]]>Snacking often during pregnancy is part of the deal. While you are consuming a few extra calories for your growing baby, pregnant women also tend to snack more because it becomes harder to eat larger meals at a time as your pregnancy progresses. The best way to make sure that both you and your little one are getting the right nutrition is by packing your pantry and refrigerator with healthy snacks that are ready when your cravings strike! Here are some of our favourite (mummy-tested) pregnancy snacks that are not only nutritious but also absolutely delicious!
1.Greek Yoghurt Crunch
This is a quick and easy snack that you can keep ready in your refrigerator to quell those mid-day hunger pangs. Simply layer a cup with greek yoghurt (non-fat, if possible), your favourite fruits like mangoes, blueberries, apples or pears, and a sprinkling of nuts like almonds or walnuts. You can even substitute the nuts with granola if you prefer.
Health Benefits:Yoghurt is great for pregnant women. It is a good source of calcium and loaded with protein. It also helps keep your digestive system functioning well. Walnuts are the best source of Omega-3 fatty acids and also provide proteins. Almonds also help keep you full and are loaded with minerals. Mangoes and apples are a great source of Vitamin A and C and provide good fiber. Berries are rich in fiber, carbohydrates and folates.
A refreshing snack that’s perfect at any time of the day!
2. Sweet Potato Chips
So delicious and yet, so healthy! Cut sweet potatoes into very thin round slices. Sprinkle them with a little cinnamon and sugar. Alternatively, you could even drizzle them in a little olive oil and sea salt. Bake on baking sheet at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour. Flip halfway during baking to make sure they bake evenly. These crispy sweet potato chips taste best fresh hot out of the oven.
Health Benefits:Sweet potatoes are loaded with fiber, potassium, Vitamins A, C and B6, perfect for giving you that much-needed energy boost. These also help greatly in controlling morning sickness.
All the fun of potatoes without any of the guilt 😊
3. Healthy Green Smoothie
Green smoothies are healthy, easy to digest and a great snack at any time of the day. For this one, simply blend together 1 cup coconut milk, ½ cup baby spinach, ½ ripe chopped avocado, ½ cup cucumber, a pinch of grated ginger and honey for sweetness.
Health Benefits:Both spinach and avocados contain a large amount of folic acid which is extremely important for the development of your growing baby. They are also loaded with essential vitamins, calcium and minerals. Avocados also contain potassium that can help reduce leg cramps during pregnancy. In addition to being quite nutritious, cucumber is also a mood-elevating food and helps regulate blood pressure.
Full of nutrients and packed with flavour!

]]>If your Pinterest wall is filled with images of diaper towers and gender-reveal cupcakes, then it’s safe to say that you’ve been waiting to throw an adorable baby shower for a while now. So if the time has come to celebrate a special ‘mummy-to-be’ in your life, then we have all the important tips you’re going to need to plan that perfect baby shower.
1. TIME IT RIGHT
Timing is everything. Let the cute Mamma-to-be show off her adorable baby bump but make sure you don’t schedule it too close to her due date so that she can enjoy her special day without any stress. Ideally, pick a date early on in her last trimester and make sure that she is comfortable with the time and date.
2. LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION.
The right location will set the mood for the party. For this one, keep in mind the guest-of-honour’s preferences. Accordingly, you could hold the party at someone’s home, a restaurant, a garden, any outdoor space, at a pool-side or even a spa/wellness retreat.
3. PICK A THEME
Here’s where the fun really begins. Unleash your creativity and choose an appropriate theme. Based on this theme, you can then start designing invitations, planning the décor, food, gifts etc.We rounded up a few of our favourite themes to get your creative juices flowing.
A. Ready to Pop: You can’t get more literal than this theme. Bring alive the theme with cake pops for snacks, lots of balloons, popcorn boxes, bottles of bubbly and pretty much anything that pops!
For the Mom who’s ready to POP!
B. Baby land: Because it’s all about the BABY! Have fun making baby-themed snacks and décor, serve your drinks in milk bottles and make bib-shaped name tags for all the guests. Pool in all your baby care products and baby gear and use them in a creative manner to truly bring the theme alive.
C. Royal Celebration: Get ready to welcome the little Prince or Princess with a royal affair. Tiaras, diaper castles, a throne for the Queen Mamma-to-be, the list of ideas is endless!
Get creative with new-born baby products for the mom-to-be
D. Colour Combinations: If you don’t want to stick to a specific theme, just choose a baby-inspired colour combination such as pink & mint or blue & light gold, and create a magical setting for your party.
4. THE INVITATIONS
As the event planner and the official MBF (Mom-to-be’s Best Friend), it’s your job to make the guest list. After you make a list of the Mom-to-be’s close friends and family, you might want to consult with her to see if she approves of all the guests. Once you finalize that, design an invite keeping your theme in mind.
If you have any special instructions for the guests, make sure you include them in the invite. One idea that we love is the ‘diaper raffle’. Simply put in a line in the invite asking guests to bring a pack of diapers that will be then entered in the diaper raffle. One lucky winner will get a fun prize. The best part about this is that the Mom-to-be will get a whole load of new diapers that she will truly appreciate when the baby comes.
5. FOOD & DRINKS
If you’re planning a baby shower along with the mom-to-be’s closest friends, it’s a great idea to ask everyone to contribute by bringing along any one food item. Plan a good mix of savoury and sweet treats and serve food buffet-style. Has the Mom-to-be been experiencing a lot of food cravings? You could serve a platter of her favourite food cravings with a sign that says “Craving Corner”! Put up a candy bar with a mix of colourful sweet treats. Play with your theme and get creative.

6. NOT A PIECE OF CAKE
You know you’ve chosen the right cake when you hear a collective “awwww” from all the guests. Baby shower cakes can be absolutely adorable, if done right. Diaper cakes, gender-reveal cakes, baby-in-a-stroller cakes – there are so many different ideas you can try out for this one.
7. FUN & GAMES
Your friend’s bridal shower may have been wild, but a baby shower is where the real fun begins. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite games that will have everyone rolling in laughter from start to end.
A. Diapers & Dolls: This is a relay game where you split your guests into 2 or more teams. Each team member has to change the diaper of a baby doll before passing the doll on to the next team member who does the same. The catch is that they have to do it BLINDFOLDED. The team that finishes first wins!
B. Guzzling the Baby Bottle: Fill a whole lot of baby bottles with a delicious drink and let the guzzling contest begin. The person who finishes the maximum amount of bottles within a specific time limit is the winner.
C. Paint the baby: All the guests are blindfolded and given a pen and paper. They have to then create a sketch what they think the new baby will look like within one minute. The sketches are then shown to the mom-to-be who chooses her favourite baby sketch.
D. Diaper Fashion: Divide players into 3-4 teams and give each team 8-10 diapers. Using the diapers, each team has to style any one of their players in the most fashionable manner by attaching the diapers to their body.Mom-to-be chooses the best diaper fashion!
8. GOODIE BAGS
Your awesome baby shower isn’t complete without these. Go for something cute and simple like candy-filled baby bottles, baby-scented candles, baby-themed cookies in jars or even a bag of beauty essentials.

]]>This is probably one of the few times in your life when packing a suitcase, weeks in advance, is completely justifiable. Packing and keeping your hospital bag ready by your 34th week will ensure you stay relaxed and stress-free as the due date approaches. Just so that you don’t miss out on anything, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of items you need to pack in your hospital bag.
Tip: Remember to separate the items that you will need during labour from those you will require post-labour so that they are easily accessible.
1. Important documentation:
Hospital registration forms, insurance and identification information and your birth plan are some of the things you should put together in a file. Ask your hospital if they require any further documents so that you don’t have to run around at the last minute.
2. Comfortable robe or old nightgown:
Though most hospitals require you to wear a hospital gown during labour, you could opt to wear something you are more comfortable in.
3. Maternity bras and nursing pads:
Make sure you have enough of these. Even if you are not nursing, you will need these in the days after.
4. Socks and cozy slippers:
Comfortable footwear will be your best friend during this experience.
5. A few front-opening nightgowns:
These will be helpful when you start breastfeeding and are also loose and comfortable.
6. Extra-absorbent maternity underwear or disposable underwear:
Whether absorbent or disposable, choose the one you are more comfortable with.
7. Bag of Toiletries:
Even though the hospital will provide some essential items, you could carry your own for comfort & convenience. We recommend a hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, facewash, shampoo, conditioner, soap/bodywash, deodorant, moisturizer, lip balm, hair ties and hair bands, tissues, contact lens case and solution.
8. Munchies:
Keep the room stocked with a couple of snacks for your partner who will also be spending a lot of time there.
9. Important gadgets:
Cell phones, phone-chargers, cameras, camera-chargers are some of the things you want to make sure you have ready at hand.
10. An extra pillowcase and towel:
In case you prefer to bring along your own pillowcase, sheet or bath towel.
11.Pack for your partner too:
Since your partner will also be spending a lot of time at the hospital, pack a few pairs of clothes and toiletries for them too.
12. Going-home outfits:
Choose a special going-home outfit for both you and your little one.
13. Full body suits, socks, mittens and a cap for the baby:
While you don’t really need to pack any baby care products for the hospital, you could take 2-3 sets of clothes for your baby if you like.
14. Car seat:
When it’s time to take your baby home, make sure you have a proper car seat to take them home safely.
