Teething is an important developmental milestone for your little ones, so gear up as we learn more about this fascinating process.
To help you know what to expect, we’ve put together a guide with your baby’s teething timeline, care tips and more.
When do babies get their first teeth?
On average, most babies start getting their first teeth at around 6-7 months of age. However, this varies quite a bit and some might even get their first teeth as early as 3-4 months or as late as 12 months.
You might notice the signs of teething a while before your baby’s first tooth actually erupts. As the tooth erupts from under the gums, many babies experience pain and discomfort and you might notice that baby is extra fussy, is drooling excessively or has red swollen gums. Click here to read more on common baby teething symptoms and how to soothe & comfort teething babies.
Your Baby’s Teething Timeline
For most babies, the first teeth to erupt are usually the bottom front or the top front teeth. These are called the lower and upper central incisors. These are often followed by the molars and then canines.
In total, your baby will have 20 teeth by the time they are 2.5-3 years old. These are called your baby’s primary, deciduous or simply baby teeth! Your baby’s primary teeth will remain until your child is around 6-7 years of age, after which they will start falling out and be replaced by your baby’s permanent teeth.
Here’s an approximate timeline of when your baby’s first teeth will typically begin to come in.
How to care for baby’s teeth?
Keep those sweet baby teeth clean & healthy by following a few basic steps.
We hope that covered most of your baby teething questions! Remember that every baby meets developmental milestones at a different pace and the same goes for their teething schedule too. Oh, and don’t forget to take lots of pictures of those sweet teethy grins!
Babies are completely reliant on us for their comfort. When you are a parent, there is nothing more important than the well-being of your baby and you’ll want to do everything in your power to keep baby as comfortable as possible.
Here are our top tips on keeping your little one comfortable in every season:
The room in which the baby is in, should have proper ventilation. Maintain a proper room temperature to keep baby cozy. The best room temperature for baby is typically between 20 to 22 degrees Celsius, provided your baby is also dressed appropriately. Click here for our quick guide on how to dress baby at bedtime, based on the temperature. Thick, dark curtains/blinds are also great, especially for darkening the room at baby’s bedtime.
One of the simplest things you can do to make sure your baby is a little more comfortable is to show them plenty of affection and love. Resting your baby on your chest with skin-to-skin contact, also known as kangaroo care, is one of the best ways to provide a comfortable, calming situation for them.
When it comes to shopping for baby products, always look for quality over quantity. Choose safe, well-made, high-quality baby products designed to truly care for your little ones.
At Softsens, our range of baby bath & skin essentials has been formulated and tested by world-class experts, for your baby’s complete care and safety. All our products are made without parabens and harsh chemicals, making them completely safe on baby’s skin. When it comes to clothing & accessories, we use the highest-quality fabrics such as GOTS-certified organic cotton and super soft bamboo that are extra soft and gentle on baby’s skin.
In addition to your baby’s daily skincare essentials, don’t forget about some other very important skin protection products including SPF essentials. It’s lovely to take baby out for some sunshine, but they MUST be protected from exposure to UV rays. Dress baby appropriately to protect their skin and use a sunblock with safe and baby-friendly ingredients like our SPF 30 Sunblock Lotion.
Another thing that can make babies extremely uncomfortable are mosquito bites. Protect your baby from mosquito/bug bites and common mosquito-transmitted diseases with our Natural Mosquito Repellent Gel & Spray and soothe any redness, itchiness or swelling with our After-Bite recovery roll on.
Fluctuating temperatures can make baby uncomfortable. Dress your baby appropriately to deal with temperature changes.
When the weather is warmer, it’s a safe bet to dress baby in only a single layer of loose clothing so they don’t overheat. Lightweight organic cotton, muslin and bamboo clothes are breathable and help baby keep cool. In fact, bamboo fabric is even known for its thermo-regulating properties, keeping the wearer warm when it’s cool, and cool when it’s warm. Bamboo is also a naturally-antibacterial and odor-resistant fabric, making it ideal for babies who are prone to eczema and skin allergies.
In chilly weather, dress baby in layers to keep them warm and cozy. Skin to skin contact with mama is a great way to warm up baby too, since your body warmth helps regulate your little one’s temperature. As your baby lays on your skin, cover him/her with a blanket or swaddle.
The general thumb rule is to dress your baby in one layer extra than what you’re wearing, as babies are more sensitive to temperature changes.
If you are stepping outside, be sure your infant is covered from head to toe, including beanies & booties to keep their heads and feet warm. You could tuck a blanket snugly around them in the stroller for added warmth.
You should dress your baby one-to-two layers to sleep. Until the baby can roll over on their own, a swaddle or sleep bag can be one of those layers. A wearable blanket, or a sleep bag is an excellent and comfortable way to add an extra layer of warmth for babies.
Babies like to have a little bit of structure in their lives when it comes to feeding and naps. Once you start feeding your baby at a certain time or begin to put them to sleep in a certain manner, they’re going to get used to that. Do your best to make sure you stay consistent with these routines so your baby is on somewhat of a schedule. This is extremely important if you want to keep your baby comfortable and prevent those fussy fits.
Hope we’ve been able to help you with useful tips and the best products and methods to keep your baby from being fussy and uncomfortable. Drop a comment below and tell us what helped you the most.

The key to helping your baby develop & establish good sleeping habits, is to establish a good bedtime routine right from the start. A bedtime routine is a set of activities that precede bedtime to help your little one fall asleep easier, and must be followed consistently over time.
Why is it important to establish a bedtime routine?
When to start following a bedtime routine?
You can start establishing a simple bedtime routine as early as 8-12 weeks. That’s when babies typically begin to develop their circadian rhythms and understand the difference between night & day. You don’t need to worry about following a bedtime routine for the first few weeks, as newborns don’t have any concept of night & day or any predictable pattern.
How to establish a peaceful bedtime routine?
Here are some tips on how to start creating a proper bedtime routine for your little ones. However, it is important to note that every family has their own set of needs and particular circumstances. Create a routine that works best for you and your family, while keeping all of baby’s needs in mind. Use these tips as a set of guiding principles to help you create the perfect bedtime routine for your baby.

]]>Watching your precious baby deal with any illness can be extremely worrisome and stressful for any parent. Which is why it’s important to have some basic knowledge of common illnesses and how to prevent and manage them if your baby does fall sick.
In this article, we’re going to talk about the “flu” and cover some basic ground such as - how try and distinguish between the flu and a common cold, how to protect your family from the flu and what steps to take if your little one catches a flu. But first, let’s understand what the flu is all about.
Influenza (commonly known as the flu) is a contagious virus that affects the respiratory tract (nose, throat, and sometimes lungs) and can sometimes lead to complications. Most people affected with the flu tend to recover within a week or so. However, elder people and children younger than 5 years of age (more so those that are younger than 2 years of age), are at higher risk of developing flu-related complications. That is why, it’s important to be extra careful of and act promptly if your little one catches a flu.
How can your baby catch a flu? This virus spreads when an infected person coughs, talks or sneezes and the droplets land on the mouth or noses of people nearby, or are inhaled by them. This means that your baby can catch it by being in the vicinity of a person who is sick with the flu, or touching a contaminated surface.
Since your baby cannot communicate with you clearly just yet, it might sometimes be hard to ascertain if your baby has a flu or a common cold. If your baby suddenly develops a fever of 100 degrees F or more, and exhibits some of the symptoms listed below, it might be signs of the flu. But if your baby has a runny nose for a few days with/without a cough and then later develops a fever, this might be the common cold. In any case, it is always best to consult with your child’s doctor so they can guide you to take any necessary steps/medication before baby gets worse.
Here are some of the most common flu symptoms in babies to look out for:
• Baby has a fever
• Runny nose
• Cough
• Not feeding/eating as per usual
• Baby seems extra cranky or fussy – this could be due to body ache/headache/chills that are common flu symptoms
• Tummy troubles, diarrhea and vomiting
• Baby is crying and clutching at the ear – this could be a sign of an ear infection
Your baby may not necessarily exhibit all of these symptoms. However, this is a general indicator of what to look out for if your baby has the flu.
Important Note: If your baby’s symptoms worsen or if your baby has a seizure, looks blue, is unresponsive, has trouble breathing, severe vomiting, dehydration or an extremely high fever, take your infant to the doctor/emergency room immediately.
The best way to protect your baby from the flu is to take simple preventative measures. Here are some of our top tips to help prevent your baby from catching a flu.
>Make sure your whole family takes the flu vaccine yearly
Getting the flu vaccine can greatly lower your child’s chances of getting the flu. For infants, the first dose is given at six months of age, followed by a second dose four weeks later. After this, the vaccine is administered on a yearly basis. You and your older kids should also take the flu vaccine yearly to help protect your family. You can also take the flu vaccine when you’re pregnant. This can actually help protect your baby against the flu.
>Wash hands, properly and frequently
Proper hand hygiene is the best way to protect your loved ones from germs. Teach your children to wash their hands properly and regularly with soap, especially before and after mealtimes, using the bathroom, playing outside, petting animals, etc. As your baby is still too young to wash their own hands, you can do it for them using warm water and soap. Make sure you too wash your hands regularly, especially while handling your infant, after changing their diapers, and so on.
>Stay away from people who are/might be sick
Flu germs can pass easily from one person to another, especially when you’re in the vicinity of a sick person. Keep your baby away from anyone who is or might be sick with the flu. If the sick person lives in the same house, keep baby in a separate room and make sure you use different towels, linen, cutlery and so on.
>Practice basic hygiene
Handwashing is your number 1 defense against the flu but you should also practice good hygiene in general. Clean and disinfect surfaces in your home regularly, especially if someone is or has been sick. Dispose of used tissues correctly.
If your baby has the flu, first make sure you consult your baby’s pediatrician to see if they require any kind of medicine. Most flu medicines are not prescribed for infants and young children, unless they develop a secondary infection. In the case of a regular flu, your baby should feel better within a week or so.
The most important thing you can do is to make your little one as comfortable as possible during this time. Here are some tips to help you relieve some of their symptoms.
>Make sure baby has lots of fluids to prevent dehydration. If baby is still breastfeeding, continue to do so. If baby has started solids, you can offer appropriate liquids to help keep them hydrated.
>Baby might not be too hungry at this time so try offering them smaller meals through the day.
>Your little one needs lots of rest to recover. Try and limit their activity as far as possible and help them sleep. Lots of snuggles and tender love & care is what your baby really needs at this time.
>Baby’s nose might be stuffy, which might in turn make them uncomfortable and cranky. You can use a nasal suction bulb to suck out any mucus and clear your baby’s airways. You can even use a humidifier in their bedroom to help them sleep better.
If baby has cold and cough like symptoms, click here to read our blog “Home Remedies to Relieve your Baby’s Cough & Cold”.
Yes. Breastmilk contains antibodies that can actually help protect your little one and strengthen their immunity. If you are too ill to breastfeed, you can express your milk and have another healthy caregiver feed your baby from a bottle so that your baby can continue receiving breastmilk. Always wash your hands properly before and after pumping and/or storing milk. In case of a decrease in supply during any illness, enlist the support of a lactation consultant who can guide you correctly at this time.

]]>Moms & Dads, we know that watching your baby go through the teething stage can be pretty distressing. Your little one might suddenly become more irritable and their sleep schedule might also be turned upside down. To help you get through this phase. we’ve put together some helpful teething tips and information. Read on to find out when your baby will typically begin to teethe, what are some common teething signs, and how to help soothe your teething baby.
To begin with, your baby has 20 teeth under the gum line, waiting to erupt. So, when do babies start teething? Most babies begin teething anytime between 4-7 months and teething can continue anytime up to 2 years of age. The first to erupt are usually the two bottom front teeth, often followed by the two top front teeth. Some babies tend to teethe slower than others, and some even experience fewer symptoms than others.
1. Fussiness/Irritability: You’ll notice if your baby suddenly seems crankier than usual. This is due to the discomfort they’re experiencing and is a common sign of teething.
2. Red and swollen gums: Check your baby’s gums to see if they are red and swollen, instead of their usual pink.
3. Excessive drooling: If you notice that your baby is drooling far more than usual, this might be a sign of teething.
4. Restlessness at night and difficulty sleeping: The discomfort can keep your baby awake at night and disrupt your little one’s sleep schedule.
5. Poor appetite: Your little one might not be interested in eating at this time as sucking on the bottle or breast may hurt their swollen gums. If you’ve already introduced solids, they might reject those too during this time. Read on to find out what kind of foods you should offer your child when they’re teething.
6. Need to chew on everything: Biting on things can actually help reduce some of the pressure on baby’s gums, so you might notice that they will tend to chew on or bite things during this phase.
7. Low grade fever: Is fever a symptom of teething in babies? Yes, some babies can develop a low-grade fever. Keep an eye on their temperature and consult your pediatrician if the fever goes above 100-101 degrees.
8. Rubbing ears and cheeks: When your baby’s teeth are erupting, they may experience pain in their ears and around their cheeks, leading them to constantly rub these areas.
Now that you know how to spot the signs of teething in babies, let’s look at some ways in which you can comfort your teething baby and help them feel better,
1. Put a little pressure on your baby’s gums
A little bit of pressure on your baby’s gums can actually relieve their pain and soothe their sore gums. One of the best ways to do this is my giving them a gum massage using your finger. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before doing this. Try this especially at night when your baby is having a hard time falling asleep. Letting your little one chew on your fingers can also be comforting to them.
2. Give them a cool washcloth to chew on
Here’s another parent-approved method to help soothe teething pain. Dip a clean wash cloth in water and wring it out. Then place the wash cloth in the fridge or freezer for a while before folding it giving it to your baby to chew on. Make sure the washcloth is clean, and doesn’t have any strings or anything that baby can choke on or swallow. Most importantly, always supervise baby when you give them something to chew on.
3. Offer cool/frozen treats
Anything that provides a cooling sensation can help reduce baby’s discomfort to a certain extent. If your baby has started solids, you can chill some of their favourite foods and offer it to them in a mesh feeder to chew on. Try mashed fruits – apples, pears, bananas are all great options. You can also freeze your breastmilk or formula in baby-safe popsicle molds and offer it to your little one to suck on. Since your baby’s appetite might have reduced during this phase, these are all great ways to get them to eat well too. Always supervise baby whenever offering any foods.
4. Refrigerate teething toys, a metal spoon or pacifiers
Once again, the coolness can help with pain. Clean any teething toy or pacifier well before putting it in the fridge and then offer it to your little one. Stay away from gel-filled baby teething toys. A lot of parents even use cold metal spoons for this purpose.
5. Wipe away drool constantly to prevent any rashes
Your baby will drool a LOT during this time, and if drool isn’t wiped away often, it can irritate your baby’s skin and cause rashes around their mouth. The best solution is to make baby wear a soft & comfortable bib that you can use to wipe away drool and to help soak it up, thus leaving baby’s skin clean and dry. Our range of soft muslin bibs are designed to be super gentle on your baby’s skin and are extra absorbent to soak up all kinds of messes and drool. Check out our range of baby bibs & burp cloths here.
6. Try using a white noise machine
Using a white noise machine might help them sleep better at night. If you don’t have one, you can also simply play white noise sounds using your phone
7. Lots of cuddle time
Doctor’s orders! Cuddling your little one and keeping them close during the teething phase can be extremely comforting to them, and can help calm them. Because a mother’s hug truly makes everything better!
8. Speak to your doctor to discuss other baby teething remedies or medication, if necessary
Consult your pediatrician and check if they can recommend any medication, if baby requires it.
This too is a phase, Mummas, and it WILL get better! We hope these tips help you comfort and soothe your teething babies. Good luck!
]]>A baby blanket is a must-have to keep your little angel cozy, snug & comforted! A baby’s skin is extremely thin and loses heat very quickly, which is why you typically dress a baby in one extra layer than what you’d dress in for the temperature.
Baby blankets can keep your baby warm & comfy. However, for your baby’s safety, it is extremely important to choose the correct baby blanket as per your baby’s age and the occasion.
According to baby sleep experts, there should be no loose blankets in your baby’s crib until they are around 1 year of age, as this can be a choking hazard and increase the risk of SIDs. However, loose baby blankets are a valuable essential too and can be used in many ways. Until your baby is one year of age, the perfect bedtime essentials are either baby swaddle blankets or baby sleep bags, as these are safe sleep essentials, and NOT choking hazards when used correctly.
Here are some other things to keep in mind when buying a baby blanket:
• Babies have super sensitive skin. So, make sure that the fabric of your baby blanket is soft, light and very gentle on your baby’s skin. Opt for soft, natural and breathable fibers like organic cotton and bamboo that are really light on baby’s sensitive skin. Keep away from synthetic fabrics that can irritate baby’s skin, and anything with fur that could possibly get into baby’s mouth and cause respiratory issues.
• Stay away from blankets that have tassels, ribbons or anything that can get tangled in baby’s hands or feet.
• Use blankets that are appropriate for both baby’s age and the season.
1. SWADDLE BLANKETS
A swaddle blanket is a valuable newborn baby essential! Why do newborns love being swaddled? It’s simple. Swaddling helps recreate the warm & cozy feeling of being in the womb, and thus helps baby feel more secure, safe, cozy and even helps them sleep better and for longer. A swaddle blanket that’s around 44”x44” is perfect for your baby until they reach 4-5 months of age, OR until they begin to roll over onto their stomach or show signs that they don’t like being swaddled anymore. Click here to find out everything you need to know about swaddling your baby - when to begin, when to stop swaddling and the best way to swaddle your newborn baby.
As babies cannot regulate their body temperature in the same way that adults do, it is important to choose a cozy but breathable swaddle blanket to keep your little one snug and warm, but to prevent them from overheating.
Our range of Softsens baby swaddle blankets are specially designed keeping your baby’s comfort & safety in mind. We’ve designed a range of bamboo and muslin swaddle blankets, that are ultra-soft, gentle, non-allergenic, breathable, naturally antibacterial, thermo-regulating and PERFECT for your baby’s delicate skin. Click here for our Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Baby Swaddle Blanket for newborns.
2. BABY SLEEP BAGS
While your newborn baby may love being swaddled, most babies outgrow their swaddle blanket by the age of 6 months or even earlier. So, what next? According to experts, there should be no loose blankets in your baby’s cot at bedtime, until they reach the age of one. So, how do you keep baby cozy AND safe at bedtime once they’ve outgrown their swaddle blankets? By using a baby sleep bag. A baby sleep bag is simply a wearable blanket that offers a safer and comfier alternative to a loose blanket.
Since your baby cannot kick it off, there is no risk of them suffocating under the blanket while they sleep. Your baby will also feel safe, secure and comforted through the night. Baby sleep bags can also be used for newborns (make sure you choose the correct size) if your newborn hates being swaddled.

Softsens baby sleep bags are available in 2 generous sizes and can be used until your baby is about 18 months old.
3. BABY & TODDLER BLANKETS
While experts recommend that babies should not be put to bed with loose blankets in the cot until they are 1 year old, you can still use a baby/toddler blanket in many ways, making it a must-have item on your baby shopping list. A baby blanket is thicker than a baby swaddle blanket so you can use it to wrap your baby during cuddle time, or use it to cover your baby in the stroller in colder weather. It’s also perfect for when you’re travelling. A baby blanket can also be spread out on the floor or a bed for tummy time.
Make sure your blanket is made from soft, light and breathable material that is safe on your baby’s skin. Avoid furry or fluffy blankets that have fibers that can be inhaled by your baby. Softsens super soft muslin blankets are made from incredibly soft, breathable and gentle bamboo-muslin are generously sized at 44x44 inches making them perfect for your little one at every stage. A checklist of essential baby safety tips that every new parent should know.
]]>When you become a parent, your child’s safety takes topmost priority and can often leave you overwhelmed or stressed. However, you can prepare yourself and lessen your worries a little by taking certain preventative measures to ensure your baby’s safety. We rounded up our top 10 baby safety tips that’ll help you protect and care for your little one.
1. Make sure your baby’s crib meets the most current safety standards
Invest in a well-made and sturdy crib for your little one. As per the most recent safety guidelines, your baby’s crib slats should not be more than 2 and 3/8th inches apart from one another, to make sure your baby’s tiny hands or legs do not get stuck in between. Make sure that you also get a full-size mattress that fits properly in the crib without leaving any gaps. Soft, breathable bedding will help your tiny little one sleep even better at night. Check out our 6-piece cot bedding set made from natural 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton for maximum comfort.
2. Invest in a good rear-facing car seat that fits properly in your car and make sure to install and test it properly
Secure your child safely in a car safety seat every time they are in the car, no matter how short the drive. Experts recommend using a rear-facing car seat until your child is about one year of age, as rear-facing car seats can protect your delicate little ones from greater impact and give better support to their head, back and neck, in case you are in an accident. Read your car safety seat manual thoroughly before installing it to make sure that it is securely attached, and make sure that the harness is not too loose when strapping your child in, to ensure your baby’s protection. When your child exceeds the weight limit for a car seat, you can progress to a booster seat to keep them safe during car rides.
3. Scan your home/baby’s spaces for any choking hazards and keep them out of baby’s reach
Babies love grabbing all kinds of objects and will immediately put them in their mouths before you even know it. But, a lot of small objects are potential choking & health hazards for your little one, which is why it’s really important to keep certain items out of their reach. This is an important part of baby proofing your home. Have a pet at home? Make sure you keep their food out of your baby’s way as pet kibble too can be a choking hazard.
4. Pay attention to bathroom safety
Use non-slip mats in your baby’s bath area and NEVER leave your baby unattended in the bathroom, even for a second. Always check the water temperature before beginning baby’s bath. Here’s our complete guide on how to bathe your newborn baby. Children are drawn to water – keep your toilet seat lids closed and your bathroom doors shut. Keep your bathroom trash cans out of reach or make sure they have a lid so that your toddler can’t get their hands on what’s inside.
5. Keep cleaning products and medicines in higher areas that your child cannot reach
Store any household cleaning products or medicines at a higher ground so that your child cannot get to them. If you must store them in lower cabinets or drawers, make sure that they have cabinet locks for your child’s safety.
6. Baby-proof your kitchen too
Make your kitchen a safe space by installing stove knob covers, cabinet locks or even appliance locks if necessary. When you’re cooking, try and use your back burners on the stove top and always turn any handles inwards. Babies love grabbing at things so if you’re holding something hot like a cup of coffee or tea, make sure you’re not carrying your baby at the same time.
7. Install baby gates at the top and bottom of staircases and in front of any area that you want to restrict your child’s access to
If you have a multi-level home, baby safety gates are a must to protect your child from any staircase-related accident. You can also use child safety gates to prevent your child from entering the kitchen or any other area that you may want to keep them out of.
8. Secure your television and any heavy furniture to the wall to prevent it from tipping over
Any heavy furniture such as bookshelves, cabinets etc. should be mounted to the wall to make sure that they don’t accidentally tip over and injure your child. The same goes for televisions. Wall mount your flatscreen TV at a safe height. If you have a box TV, make sure it is properly secured on a table and cannot tip over. This is important for ensuring your child’s safety at home.
9. Cover electrical outlets and keep chargers out of reach
Child proof your home by using electrical outlet caps to prevent injuries. Children can actually suffer from serious shocks or burns if they accidentally poke an item into an electrical outlet. Keep any chargers out of reach too.
10. Soften any sharp edges that can hurt your child when they fall, and pay attention to door safety
Children tend to fall a lot, and that’s okay, but it is important to prevent any serious injury by softening any sharp edges in your home such as table corners. You can use baby-safe corner guards or furniture padding for this purpose. Another thing you want to be careful about is door safety as your baby’s tiny fingers can easily get hurt if caught in the doors. A child-proof door lock and pinch guard is a great way to prevent this from happening.

Worried that your baby’s hair isn’t growing fast enough or that it’s too thin or scanty? Don’t worry, Moms & Dads. Read on to find out everything you need to know on baby hair loss, regrowth and how to stimulate hair growth in babies.
]]>Hey Moms & Dads - worried that your baby’s hair isn’t growing too fast or that it’s too scanty or thin? Don’t worry, you’re not the only ones. Baby hair growth & hair loss is a topic of much concern among new parents. The good news? There isn’t really much to stress about. Why not? Well, hair(s) what you need to know.
As newborns, some babies have a head full of lush, thick hair, while some are bald or have very little hair. However, your baby will lose most of this newborn hair within their first six months, due to hormonal shifts. Don’t be alarmed – this initial hair fall in babies is absolutely normal. After this happens, your infant will soon grow new hair, which might actually be pretty different in texture and even colour, than their newborn hair. This new hair growth usually takes place anytime between 4 months to 2 years of age.
Simply put, infant hair loss is normal and shouldn’t be a cause of concern. However, there are still many ways in which you can help speed up your baby’s hair growth and promote healthier, stronger & better baby hair. Here are 10 effective tips to help boost baby’s hair growth:
Massaging your baby’s scalp regularly with a baby-safe hair oil can boost blood circulation to the scalp, and thus accelerate hair growth. It’s important to choose the correct baby hair oil for this purpose. Pick one that is specially formulated for your baby’s sensitive skin and includes natural ingredients that have hair & scalp nourishing properties.
Softsens Baby Natural Hair Oil is a perfect bio-nourish blend of 7 natural seed oils – olive, linseed, coconut, sesame, jojoba, argan and almond. Each of these oils were carefully chosen to provide a wide range of benefits, right from stimulating baby’s hair growth, to reducing cradle cap effects, hydrating & softening the scalp and hair, and much more. It is the perfect all-in-one solution to all your baby’s scalp and hair care problems.
After gently massaging the oil into baby’s scalp, let it sit for at least half an hour. Gently wash it off at bath-time with Softsens baby tear-free shampoo and lukewarm water. To know more, read our article – All you need to know about oiling your baby’s hair.
Just like a scalp massage boosts circulation, brushing your baby’s scalp and hair also has the same effect. In fact, if your baby has cradle cap or an extremely flakey scalp, then try brushing your baby’s scalp after first applying the baby hair oil to the scalp. The oil helps soften the scalp and loosen the dry skin, while brushing can gently get rid of the flakes. Make sure that you use a gentle baby-safe brush for this purpose as your little one’s scalp is still very sensitive.
Sometimes, when your baby’s hair isn’t properly untangled, it can lead to knots in the hair, causing hair breakage and loss. Prevent this from happening by gently untangling baby’s hair using a wide-toothed baby comb. It’s also easier to run the comb through tangles while your baby’s hair is still wet after a bath.
This may not seem like a big deal but it is. Your baby’s hair is extremely delicate and can be easily damaged, causing further hair loss. So, make sure you use a soft towel to dry baby’s hair after bath time. Many people also tend to rub the scalp vigorously with a towel to dry hair. This too can cause hair breakage. Instead, gently pat the scalp dry using a soft baby towel.
Until your baby is about 6 months old, simply make sure he/she remains well hydrated with breast milk or formula. Once your baby is 6 months old, you can start including certain foods in their diet. If you’ve introduced your baby to solid foods, make sure they’re getting a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables and protein. Include foods that are rich in Vitamin A, B vitamins, iron, zinc and Vitamin D. Some excellent baby foods that contain these essential nutrients are – sweet potatoes, carrots, papaya, butternut squash, eggs, dark green leafy vegetables, bananas, and mangoes.
While it can be very tempting to attempt all kinds of cute hairstyles on your baby, it’s important to avoid anything that can potentially damage or pull at your baby’s hair, causing hair fall. This includes hair clips, bows and hair ties. If you do need to use something to keep baby’s hair away from the face, a soft cloth hairband would be a better alternative.
If you can get your baby to sit still for a short bit (ha!), a quick haircut from time to time can actually make your baby’s hair look healthier. A lot of babies also tend to have bald spots and patchy growth, so trimming the hair can help make sure it grows out more evenly.
Can shaving your baby’s hair actually help it grow faster?
Shaving the baby’s hair is a common practice in many cultures around the world, for a wide range of reasons. However, according to studies, shaving the hair doesn’t necessarily help it grow faster. It may give baby’s hair a healthier appearance as it grows back, but there is no direct link between shaving the hair and faster hair growth. In India, this is known as the ‘Mundan’ ceremony. If you do choose to shave your baby’s hair for any reason, make sure that you have it done by a hair professional and that they use clean and safe equipment. Keep your baby well-fed and rested so that they aren’t irritable during the process. Wash your baby’s scalp afterwards.
The long & short of it…
Try not to stress about your baby’s hair loss as this is absolutely normal and will happen in the first six months. Instead of obsessing over your baby’s hair growth, simply focus on keeping baby’s hair and scalp healthy, nourished, soft and smooth by following a simple hair care regime using safe & effective baby hair care products

]]>A Parent’s Guide to Vaccinations duringthe Coronavirus Pandemic
]]>In this article:
1. Importance of vaccinations
2. Should I vaccinate my child during COVID-19?
3. Safety tips during vaccination visits
COVID-19 is an unprecedented health emergency which India and the rest of world are currently dealing with. The coronavirus pandemic is interrupting the immunization schedule of many children as many parents are worried about the potential exposure to coronavirus if they take their babies to a hospital. India is projected to record the birth of more than 20 million babies between March and December this year, according to a latest UN report. Without vaccinations, all these children will be susceptible to a host of life-threatening diseases such as diphtheria, whooping cough, rotaviral diarrhea, measles, polio, etc., and infants under one year of age are most vulnerable. In this article, we’re going to discuss how to go about the vaccination of your children during this coronavirus pandemic.
Importance of vaccinations
Immunization is one of the most fundamental and cost-effective public health interventions to date. Vaccinations not only offer protection to our children but they also help in protecting community at large (concept of herd immunity wherein vaccination provides protection to both those who are vaccinated and those who are unvaccinated as they are less likely to be exposed) and they also provide protection for the future. Most new parents have a fair idea about vaccine preventable diseases like diphtheria, whooping cough, rotaviral diarrhea, measles, polio, thanks to a very strong immunization network in our country but the present COVID-19 pandemic is threatening to unwind decades of progress against these vaccine preventable diseases. Babies less than one year of age have an immature immune system and vaccination is the cornerstone of protection for them against vaccine preventable diseases. Missing or delaying a vaccine dose may impact his or her vaccination schedule, making the child susceptible to various diseases. Also, there is a considerable risk of focal outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) like measles if immunization services are disrupted even for brief periods. This will put an additional burden on our already fragile healthcare systems.
Should I vaccinate my child during COVID-19?
Leading global health agency World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the importance of maintaining essential health services such as immunization during this ongoing pandemic. Both, the Government of India and Indian Academy of Pediatrics – Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Immunization Practices (IAP-ACVIP), have issued guidelines advising continuation of routine immunization activities under conditions which are safe both for health care providers and the community during the current coronavirus pandemic. Missing or delaying vaccine doses may negatively impact the vaccination schedule of a child making him or her susceptible to various diseases. Prioritizing vaccines in immunization schedule is also important in the current scenario. All newborns must be administered BCG, OPV and Hepatitis B vaccines before discharge from the hospital. Primary vaccination series DPT, Hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib), OPV/IPV, Rotavirus, Pneumococcal (PCV), Influenza, MR/MMR, Varicella should never be missed, delayed or postponed. Multiple vaccines can be given in a single visit without the fear of increased side effects.
Safety tips during vaccination visits
Certain general instructions to be followed by parents for utilizing vaccination services are as follows:
Although delaying vaccination is not a new phenomenon, it is neither advisable nor recommended by pediatricians world over, simply because of the reasons discussed above. The fear of coronavirus is resulting in missed or delayed vaccinations, but many hospitals are taking safety measures to keep you and your child safe during routine vaccination visits. The bottom line – go for your child’s vaccinations without any hesitation.

5 Safe Sleep Practices for Babies
]]>As a new parent, making sure that your baby is cozy & comfortable, especially when they’re asleep, is often one of your top priorities. And while it’s important to create a cozy sleeping environment for your baby, it is even more vital to create a “safe” sleeping space for your little one. While the thought of it is alarming, it’s important to be aware of the fact that unsafe or improper sleep practices can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or other sleep-related accidents.
However, following safe sleeping practices for infants is quite simple and straightforward. Here are our top safe sleep practices for infants.
1. Don’t place baby to sleep in your bed
Co-sleeping, i.e. sleeping with your baby on the same bed, may seem easier, especially during those nighttime feeds, but it can be quite dangerous and can increase the risk of SIDS. An adult bed is not suitable for a newborn for a number of reasons, from its height to the type of bedding used. There is also a chance of you rolling on to baby while you both are asleep, thus blocking baby’s air passage.
For safety purposes, your baby should ideally sleep on her own, in a proper crib or bassinet with a firm mattress. That said, placing your baby’s crib/bassinet in your room is a great idea. Sleeping in the same room (not bed) has actually been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. During nighttime feedings, it’s okay to breastfeed while sitting on your bed. However, make sure you put baby back in her own sleep area once you’re done with your feeding/changing routine.
2. Prep the crib correctly
The safest sleeping space for your baby is her own crib or bassinet. Once your crib or bassinet arrives or once you are done setting it up, do a complete check to make sure that there are no splinters, screws, sharp edges or anything that has not been fixed properly and might potentially hurt your baby.
Set up the crib/bassinet with a firm mattress that is correctly sized. It is very essential that this mattress be firm and not soft to help create a safe sleeping space. Cover the mattress properly with a soft and tight-fitted sheet. If this sheet is loose or comes off easily when grabbed, it can be potentially dangerous.
Another safe sleeping practice that lots of parents tend to overlook is making sure that your baby’s crib is empty when you lay baby down. This means no toys, blankets, pillows, bumper pillows, or anything that could accidentally cause suffocation.
Babies should never be put to sleep on chairs, sofas and other areas as this too can be quite dangerous. If your baby does fall asleep in a different area, move her to the crib or bassinet immediately.
3. Put baby to sleep lying on her back
It is recommended that babies always be put to sleep on their back, at least until they reach one year of age. This is the safest sleeping position for your little one. Do not put baby to sleep lying on the stomach or even on the side as she could roll over, which could increase the chance of possible suffocation. As your little one grows, she may start rolling over on her own or changing positions as she sleeps. If that happens, let her remain as she is unless you feel that she is in a potentially dangerous position.
Daily tummy time is great for your developing baby but must ALWAYS be supervised.
4. Dress them in safe & cozy clothing
For newborns, swaddling is a safe option and it helps your little one sleep better and longer. However, when you do swaddle, make sure the swaddle is snug but not too tight and is breathable enough to prevent baby from overheating. Click here to learn how to swaddle the correct way.
If your notice that your little one is trying to roll over, doesn’t like to be swaddled anymore or tries to wriggle out of it, you should stop swaddling your baby. Click here for a guide on when to stop swaddling and how to do it.
Depending on the weather, other safe sleepwear options are footie pajamas, onesies and sleep sacks.
5. Create a comfortable & safe atmosphere
Your baby will probably feel uncomfortable if the room is too hot or too cold. The temperature in your room should be just right for your little one.
Exposure to second-hand smoke can be harmful for baby so ensure that neither you nor anyone else smokes around the baby.
Giving your baby a pacifier (after you’ve established breastfeeding) can also be quite helpful and has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. It is safe for your baby to sleep with a pacifier, even if she ends up pushing it out of her mouth.
If you decide to hang a cot mobile above baby’s crib, make sure that it is at an appropriate height so that your baby is not able to easily grab or tug at it. This becomes more crucial especially as your baby grows and begins to stand up in the crib.
We hope these safe sleeping tips will help you create the best sleep environment for your little one. Share your own baby sleep practices and other experiences with us so that we can each learn from one another.
]]>How to Take Perfect Baby Photos with Your Smartphone
]]>You’ve got the cutest model ever! You just need to figure out how to take the best photos of your little sweetheart using your smartphone. Here are some of our favourite tips on taking jaw-dropping baby photos with your smartphone.
1. Find the light and time them right
Taking a great photo is all about finding the right light. Stop using the Flash feature on your phone and make use of soft, beautiful, natural light to take stunning baby images. Here are some tips to use light right:
2. Use a plain backdrop
Place your baby against a plain background, whether it’s just a simple light-coloured blanket or white wall. Look around your home for backdrops you can use. Your baby needs to stand out against the background.
3. Get creative with props and themes
Do a little scavenging around your home for bits & bobs that you can use in your baby pictures to add a little colour or texture. Found a cute basket or box? Layer it with a few cozy blankets and place your little one inside for a cute baby picture. Use toys as props. Props should always be simple so that they don’t distract from the main subject – your baby.
Another fun project is to take the same picture of your baby every month using the same background and props to track his/her growth through the year. You can make a fun collage with those cute baby images at the end of the year. Put his/her favourite stuffed animal in the picture so that one can actually see your baby’s growth over time.
4. Get up close for those macro shots
Focus on your baby’s features for some beautiful shots. Instead of using the zoom feature on the smartphone, bring your camera up close to capture clearer, better pictures. When doing this, try and keep your hand as steady as possible to capture great quality baby images.
5. Keep baby wipes nearby to clean up any baby messes quickly between shots
For quick cleaning of spit, drool and so on! This is especially helpful if you’re undressing baby for your photoshoot. You never know when a diaper blowout might strike.
6. Keep clothing & accessories simple and subtle
Again, you don’t want anything to take away attention from the main subject of your photo – your baby! So, dress your baby in simple outfits and use solid, subtle colours. Try and stay away from jazzy patterns and maintain a specific colour scheme. Or keep it REALLY simple and take photos of your baby only in diapers or even diaper-less. Simple, pastel-coloured swaddle blankets are also perfect when you’re taking cute newborn baby pictures. Sometimes, adding just one simple accessory to a picture such as a fun beanie can make all the difference. Use a simple headband or a sweet flower crown for baby girl images. For cute baby boy images, use a simple beanie, a bowtie or even suspenders.
7. Keep your baby engaged with toys
Pro trick: Get your baby to focus on the camera by dangling their favourite toys in front of the camera.
8. Think about poses and photo angles beforehand
Decide on 3-4 different poses that your baby is comfortable in and then try them out while taking pictures. You can even ask your spouse or someone else to hold your little one in different positions for pictures and then crop out their hands during editing.
While traditional front-facing pictures are pretty common, try laying your baby on a flat surface and experiment with overhead pictures. You’ll be surprised at the kind of pictures you might get if you simply try a different angle.
9. Get a basic tripod for your phone and go hands free
Between setting up the shot and handling your baby, getting the perfect baby photo can be hard. So get a simple smartphone tripod with a remote like this one and take pictures easily with a click of a button. This also leaves you free to get into the shot if you want.
10. Pick the right moment to start snapping away
When is your baby most relaxed and happy? Is it after bath-time, or maybe right after a feed? That’s when you should be taking pictures. Look out for those cute expressions and keep your camera within reach.
11. Try black and white photography
Some moments look extra special when captured in black and white. Experiment with this.
12. Make sure your tiny model has had his/her beauty sleep
It isn’t easy taking pictures of a cranky model. Make sure your baby has had a good rest and is not hungry or tired when you start your baby photoshoot. If it’s cold indoors, make sure your baby is appropriately dressed and comfortable. Oh, and most importantly, make sure you just changed that diaper!
13. Get some ‘app’ assistance
Download a couple of free apps to help edit and enhance your baby photos. Snapseed is great for improving picture quality. Try VSCO and Instagram for gorgeous filters. Create collages using Layout app and PicStitch. For hands-free photography, download TimerCam. Bokehful can help add amazing light effects to take your photos to the next level. Another great way to photograph babies is by taking burst shots. Use the High Speed Camera app for this one!
14. Be patient and take LOTS of pictures
You might not get the exact picture you envisioned but be patient and take lots of different pictures from different angles. Improvise and be spontaneous. For every 50 pictures, you might get 1 that’s REALLY special. Most of all, enjoy the process!
5 Common Baby Sleep Issues & Solutions
]]>When your baby sleeps well, you get to sleep well too. But the truth is that babies, especially newborns can have pretty unpredictable sleep patterns and a range of other sleep issues. So, here are some common baby sleep problems and how you can tackle them.
1. What is the right time to put baby to sleep at night?
Although there is no one time that works for all babies, try and fix an early bedtime for your little one. Based on your routine, this could be anytime between 6.30 pm to 8 pm, usually once the sun has set. Once you have picked a time, try and keep it consistent. It also helps to pick a bedtime at which you know that your baby usually begins to doze off. Sometimes, your baby may not show any signs of being sleepy. In fact, it might be quite the opposite. He might be active, hyper or playful. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your baby is not ready to go to sleep yet. A lot of parents may misinterpret this behaviour and put their babies to sleep later. When your baby stays up longer than usual, he might get overstimulated and overtired, which leads to this hyper behaviour. If your baby has now got used to staying awake later, simply try putting baby to sleep 15 minutes earlier than his usual time and gradually increase this in increments until you reach an ideal bedtime.
2. My baby only falls asleep when someone is holding/rocking him. How do I make my baby sleep on his own?
Your baby falls asleep in your arms because he finds this to be soothing. For your baby to begin sleeping on his own, he needs to either start learning to self-soothe or you need to figure out another technique that helps soothe him. Now, as newborns cannot really self-soothe, experts suggest that you can begin sleep training once your baby is around 5-6 months of age. However, you don’t have to wait that long to try and encourage good sleeping habits. Here are a few things you can do to try and help your baby to start falling asleep without having to be held/rocked every time:
-Your baby needs to learn to fall asleep in a place other than your arms. This should ideally be his crib. So, instead of waiting until your baby falls asleep before placing him in the crib, rock your little one for a bit and as soon as you see that he is getting drowsy, place him in the crib. If he starts crying, pick him up and try it again.
- The key to teaching any new habits is consistency. So, while a technique may not necessarily work the first few times, if you implement it consistently, you will most likely see results within a week or so. - A lot of parents use white noise machines to help put their babies to sleep. Place your baby in the crib, switch on the machine and sit beside him until he falls asleep. Again, if you’re going to try using a white noise machine, you need to use it consistently for a while to see any results.
- Get creative. As no two babies are the same, what works for one might not work for another. Keeping your baby’s habits/likes/dislikes in mind, think of soothing techniques that do not involve you having to carry your baby until he falls asleep.
3. My baby tends to sleep through the day and stays awake at night. How do I change this pattern?
Newborns can’t really tell the difference between day and night because their circadian rhythm hasn’t developed properly yet. This is why your baby is not sleeping at night and sleeping longer during the day. So, it’s up to us to set the clock right and help them understand this distinction. If your baby has problems sleeping at night, here are some helpful sleeping tips you can follow to change this:
- Light exposure plays an important role in establishing your baby’s day & night rhythm. In the day time, make sure that there is enough natural light coming into your baby’s room. Sit in a spot with ample day light during feeding or play sessions. Before bed-time, avoid artificial light sources and either switch off or dim the lights before putting baby to bed.
- During the day, keep your baby engaged by including him in your daily activities. Encourage playtime and movement during the day. At bedtime, keep activity to a minimum and try and get your little one to relax. Create a soothing atmosphere.
- A consistent and relaxing bedtime routine can also help your baby wind down and get ready to sleep at night. Set a fixed bedtime. Massage your baby with a calming massage oil or give him a bath before bedtime. Sing him a lullaby or read a story. All these small activities act as cues to let your baby know that it’s time to go to bed.
- When you wake your baby up for a night feed, don’t make eye contact/play/start talking to him. After you’re done changing and feeding him, simply put him back to bed quietly.
All these small habits will slowly help your baby to start making out the difference between day and night, and help him to sleep better at night and stay awake longer during the day.
4. How do you tackle sleep regression in babies?
As your baby grows, his sleep patterns become a little more predictable. However, this can be disrupted if your baby experiences ‘sleep regression’. You’ll notice that your baby’s sleep patterns have suddenly changed or ‘regressed’ and he is waking up more often through the night, refusing to nap or napping for shorter periods. You might also find that he has become excessively cranky and/or you’re finding it harder to put him to bed. More often than not, sleep regression occurs around the 4-month-mark, or at 9 months or 18 months, and it can last from anywhere between 2 to 6 weeks. However, before you conclude that your baby has sleep regression, try and ensure that these changes are not being caused by some kind of illness or teething pain. If you’re sure your baby is undergoing sleep regression, here are some ways you can deal with it.
- It’s okay to be flexible but don’t change your bedtime routine. Keep following the same pre-bedtime rituals that your baby is accustomed to and tweak it slightly, if necessary.
- Your baby might have regressed to his previous sleep behaviour, but that doesn’t mean you should regress to using the earlier sleep methods that your baby has outgrown, such as rocking your baby to sleep or walking around with him. This can cause your baby to fall back into old habits and associations, which will then be much harder to break. Instead, soothe your baby through other means. If your baby seems to be soothed by a pacified or white noise machine, try those instead.
- During sleep regression, your baby will most likely get a loss less sleep than usual – this lack of sleep can cause them to become cranky and fussy. So, try and increase the frequency of naps, whenever possible, even if your baby is sleeping for shorter periods. Anytime that you notice your baby is drowsy or showing signs of sleepiness, take him to a quiet space and try and put him to sleep.
- Sometimes, parents may misinterpret baby’s refusal to sleep/crankiness as a sign that they are hungry. While this may be true at times, it is not always the case. As sleep regression usually occurs when your baby is going through a new developmental stage, your baby’s sleeplessness is mostly spurred by over alertness and brain activity, not hunger. However, trust your instincts and if you do feel that your baby is hungry, feeding your little one can help calm them down. That said, it helps if you ensure that baby has had a good satisfying feed before you put them to sleep at night.
- If your baby is younger, he might find it comforting to be swaddled at night. Similarly, a bath or a calming massage before bedtime can also help baby relax.
- Try and remember that this is not a permanent change and your baby’s sleep patterns will regularize soon. Create a calm atmosphere and provide lots of cuddles & kisses. If you get frustrated often, this feeling can rub off on your baby as well.
5. My baby becomes totally alert after her night feed and it’s hard to put her back to bed. How do I help her go back to sleep after a night feed?
As discussed above, young babies can’t really distinguish between day and night and so, we need to help them out a little. To put it simply, she needs to learn that daytime is for play and other activities, whereas nighttime is for sleep. Next time your baby wakes for a night feed, gently lift her out of her crib without making any eye contact. Keep the lights very dim and avoid making any loud sounds. Don’t engage with your baby or talk to her. Just follow the drill and once you’re done feeding, changing and burping, put her back in her crib. Note – if you don’t necessarily have to change your baby’s diaper at that point, avoid it and put her back to bed. Don’t walk around burping her for too long either. Keep the atmosphere as calm and soothing as possible so that she drifts back to sleep easily.

]]>What You Should Know Before Taking Your Baby Out for The First Time
]]>The first few weeks with your newborn can seem like a whirlwind of activity and if you have any free time at all, the only thing you probably want to do is sleep. Isn’t that correct? But once you start getting used to your new routine, you’ll soon want to start getting out of the house for a bit every day. Spending time outdoors can be really beneficial for both you and your new baby. Not only will itprovide you with some much-needed recreation and fresh air, but it’ll also help you get some exercise and is a great mood-lifter. ]]>The Ultimate Guide on Dressing Your Baby
]]>Shopping for baby clothes can be pretty addictive, so before you get carried away and pick up ten adorable baby dresses for your newborn (simply because they’re cute), it’s important to stop and consider a few essential things. In this guide to shopping for baby apparel, we’ve put together basic tips, monthly guidelines and seasonal advice on what to keep in mind while dressing your baby. Let’s begin with some essential tips that you can follow before you start shopping:
Now that we’ve got the basics covered, let’s look at some age-wise advice on dressing your baby!
1. For babies that are 0-3 months old
- At this age, babies need to be changed very often. So, stick to organic onesies/baby bodysuits with a snap button at the bottom for easy diaper changes.
- Your baby loves to be swaddled at this age so you’ll need at least 4-5 swaddle blankets, if not more, depending on how often you wash them.
- As your baby will spend most of the time sleeping, you want to make sure that clothing is light and comfortable.
- A lot of babies tend to kick a lot, thus flinging off their socks in the process. If your baby does this, choose snug socks that won’t easily come off or simply dress your baby in long baby footies that cover their feet as well.
- When taking your baby outdoors in the sun, you need to cover their skin appropriately as babies cannot ideally use sunscreen for the first six months. Dress them in long-sleeved clothing that covers their skin, but is still light and breathable to prevent overheating. Make them wear a wide-brimmed hat to cover the face.
- When buying tops and baby dresses, make sure the neck is wide enough to easily go over your baby’s head while dressing. Avoid anything with a collar or high neck. Bottoms/tights with a wide elastic waistband are the most practical and convenient.
2. For babies that are 3-6 months old
- Although onesies are still the most comfortable clothing for babies even at this age, you can also make your baby wear other combinations during the day such as comfy tights tops or t-shirts, and dresses for baby girls.
- At night, a soft pair of footie pyjamas will help keep baby cozy and comfy from top to toe.
- Babies become more curious and aware, he/she is more likely to start reaching out for items and pulling at them. So, keep clothes simple and avoid extra detailing and decorative add-ons.
3. For babies that are 6-9 months old
- As your baby grows, he/she will soon start crawling or walking. To make sure they don’t slip while scooting across the floor, avoid making your baby wear socks or anything that covers their feet when you put them down. If you do, choose anti-skid clothing.
- Comfy pants/tights are a good choice when your baby begins to crawl as it will help protect their knees. Since your baby is now moving around, clothing should be comfortable and stretchy so as to maximize movement.
4. For babies that are 9-12 months old
- If your baby has started eating finger foods, things are about to get pretty messy! This means more outfit changes and more laundry. Buy baby items in darker colours so that stains are easier to remove. Stock up on baby bibs as you will need those at feeding time.
- Stretchy tops, tees and bottoms are perfect for daily wear as baby starts moving about even more. Organic cotton fabrics are more flexible, making them a great choice for baby clothing.
Tips on Dressing your Baby according to the Weather
- In warm weather, onesies, rompers, vests with wide necks are all good choices. Always make sure that clothing is light and breathable so that baby doesn’t get overheated.
- The general thumb rule is to dress your baby in one layer extra than what you’re wearing, as babies are more sensitive to temperature changes.
- During cold weather, dress your baby in layers that are easy to remove when needed. Start with a long-sleeved bodysuit/footie/baby jumpsuit, add pants and a shirt if needed, a cozy baby jacket on top of that and a snowsuit, if necessary.
- You can dress your baby in fleece during winter but direct skin contact with harsher fabrics might irritate your baby’s skin. That’s why always make sure you put on a base layer that’s made of a lighter, softer fabric and then layer on top of that.
- In cold weather, make sure you cover your baby from top to toe, including with a cap for their head and ears and warm booties/socks for their feet.
How to Dress your Baby when going Swimming
- You don’t need to wait to introduce your baby to the swimming pool, although some moms do hold off until baby is 6 weeks or so to prevent any chance of infection.
- Firstly, get a good swim diaper. Your baby is going to have accidents and you don’t want to contaminate the swimming pool. You can get either disposable swim diapers or reusable swim diapers.
- Babies are more sensitive to the cold, so a baby wetsuit can help keep your baby covered and comfortable in the water. Less than 3 months old babies should be taken to heated pools. Baby swimming wraps are also easy to put on and can keep baby warm in the water.
- If you’re taking baby swimming outdoors, make sure they have enough sun protection. Rash guards can help protect their sensitive skin.
Choosing Appropriate Footwear
- Babies don’t need proper shoes until they start walking. Baby socks and booties are perfect for the pre-walking stage.
- When your baby begins to walk, you can choose from a wide range of infant shoes available in stores. Always make sure the shoe is comfortable enough with a little extra space as baby’s feet tend to grow pretty fast.
- Since your baby is learning how to walk and run properly, make sure the shoes have a proper grip.
- In warmer weather, one-toe sandals are great but make sure they have a strap securing the foot in the front and at the back.

Baby Poop: What to Expect and to Look Out For
]]>A common characteristic of parents across the world is the inclination to analyze and discuss their baby’s poop at length and in great detail – right from colour to consistency, frequency and quantity. After all, your baby’s poop can say a lot about their overall health and their eating habits. So, if you’re a new parent and you’re interested in learning about all the different types of baby poop, what to expect and what kind of warning signs you should look for, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get started!
Firstly, it’s important to remember that a baby’s poop changes in texture and appearance over time. For example, a breastfed baby’s poop will look pretty different from the poop of a child who has just begun eating solids. The shade of your baby’s poop can also differ a lot from time to time, so let’s try and understand better why and when this happens.
Here’s all you need to know about the different kinds of baby poops you will most likely see as your baby grows:
SIGNS THAT YOU SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR
Your baby’s poop is reflective of their health. Here are a few problematic signs to watch for when it comes to your baby’s poop.
How often should a newborn baby poop?
Babies that are breastfed typically poop right after every feed for the first few weeks. In comparison, formula-fed babies might poop 3-4 times a day. As time goes by, this number slowly reduces. After a few months, some babies might poop daily or some might even routinely poop every few days. As long as your baby’s poop is soft and not showing any major difference, your little one is fine. However, if you’re concerned that your baby’s poop routine is not what it should be, it’s always best to speak to your doctor and address your worries.
We hope this answers all your poop-related questions! If there’s something we haven’t answered sufficiently, leave us a comment or send us a message.
10 Tips to Encourage Your Baby to Start Crawling
]]>Your baby’s first year is filled with a number of exciting milestones and one of them is when your baby first begins to crawl. As a parent, we’re sure you’re eager for your baby to start exploring the world around them. (Although we think you might feel differently when your little one starts moving around at full speed, reaching for and grabbing everything in sight). However, the truth is that every baby’s developmental milestones take place at different times and in different ways. So, what can you expect at this stage? When will your baby start crawling? How can you encourage your baby to crawl? We’re answering all your crawling-related questions below. Read on.
When do babies start crawling?
Although there is no definite age marker, most babies start crawling anytime between 6 to 10 months of age. However, it’s important to remember that every baby’s developmental process is different and should not be compared to that of another child. So, whether your baby begins crawling early on or starts crawling closer to their one-year birthday, it is absolutely okay. Crawling is a natural progression in your child’s development process and is not something that you can make them learn. But, there are some ways in which you can help your baby to startcrawling and move about. We’re going to discuss some of these methods below.
First, here are some things you should know about infant crawling:
Although you should never push your baby to crawl before she is ready to, you can gently encourage your baby to crawl by using some of the methods below.
1. Give baby lots of tummy time
Giving your baby an adequate amount of supervised tummy time daily can help greatly in strengthening their neck, shoulder and arm muscles, which will eventually help them start crawling. Some experts suggest that you can start with a few minutes of tummy time right from the start whereas others say that the three-month mark is a good time to begin. Start off with shorter bursts of tummy time. At three months of age, you can give her 15-30 minutes of supervised tummy time daily. In the beginning, your baby might cry a little or resist it so it’s better to get them accustomed to it in small doses. Always lay your baby on a flat, comfortable and clean surface while doing this. Engage with your baby while she is on her tummy to try and get her to lift her head slowly. In addition to this, you can also encourage your baby to play on all sides – front, back, left and right.
2. Give them some incentive (AKA toys)
Like most of us, babies need incentive to do certain tasks as well. During tummy time, place your baby’s favourite toy within your baby’s eyesight, but out of reach. Wiggle the toy with your hands and turn it into a fun game for your little one. You will soon see them try to move towards the toy. Keep bringing the toy closer and then farther away to encourage your baby. Use toys that are really engaging – those with wheels also work really well.
3. Make sure your baby is dressed comfortably
Dress your baby comfortably during playtime to encourage exploration. Soft and stretchy tights will help keep your baby cozy and help reduce floor friction as she begins to move about. Softsens Baby Textured Knit pants are ultra-soft, comfortable and made from 100% organic cotton. These cute pants come with an adjustable waistband and snug cuffs, making them perfect for both playtime and naptime. You can get them here! If your baby is comfortable in something a bit lighter, a baby bodysuit or onesie is ideal for playtime.Softsens Baby Bodysuits are ultra-soft and stretchy, short-sleeved, with a round, stretchable neckline and an easy opening for diaper changes. Get them here!
4. Create a safe and secure crawling area
When your little one begins crawling, the world (we mean your home) is her oyster. You’ve probably been warned but we’ll say it again – a crawling baby can move at lightning-fast speed and reach for everything in sight. So, make sure you baby-proof your home properly to avoid any kind of accidents. We can’t stress this step enough. Put away items that they could possibly choke on or ingest, make sure the ground is clean, if you have a staircase put baby gates both at the top and bottom. To help you get started, here are a few things you can secure or keep out of baby’s reach:
5. Place your palms below baby’s feet
When your baby starts getting up on all fours, place your palms below her feet to give her added support and balance.
6. Avoid too much time in baby seats/carriers/bouncers/walkers
While you might need one or more of these items regularly, make sure your baby doesn’t spend too much time sitting in them. These are supportive devices and inhibit your baby’s muscle movement. Your baby needs to be able to move around and play freely to be able to learn to start crawling.
7. Be your baby’s biggest cheerleader
Your baby will crawl when she’s ready and not a minute before that. Cheer your baby on, engage with her and be enthusiastic when she shows signs that she’s ready to crawl, but DO NOT be pushy. Every baby is different and comparing one to another is never helpful.
8. Have some fun in front of the mirror
Fun fact: most babies are fascinated by their own reflection. So, when you put your baby in front of a mirror, it might encourage her to move about or actually pull herself up. Exercise safety and caution while trying this with your baby.
9. Get down and crawl with your little one
Show your baby exactly how it’s done by getting down to their level and crawling around. They might try to mimic your movement and crawl. If not, it’ll still be a fun game to play with your baby.
10. Get them off the ground by putting something soft yet firm below their tummies
Put a soft folded blanket or pillow below your baby’s tummy to get her off the ground and to help her start using her arms and legs a bit. This might get her to assume the correct position and start crawling.
It’s important to remember - all of these are just tips to help encourage your baby to crawl but each baby will take her own time. A lot of parents ask – “What should I do if my baby is not crawling at 10 months?” If your baby is a late crawler, it is NOT a reason to worry. Let them learn at their own pace. If you are still concerned about their mobility, you can consult your pediatrician. They will eventually begin to crawl OR they might even go straight to walking. Just make sure you keep your cameras ready for this important moment and don’t forget to smother them with lots of kisses afterwards.
]]>If you’re expecting a baby or have recently welcomed a little one, you’ll know that sleep is a very important part of your baby’s routine.
]]>If you’re expecting a baby or have recently welcomed a little one, you’ll know that sleep is a very important part of your baby’s routine. It’s also something that you (the parent) aren’t going to get much of for a while. So, let’s find out more about your newborn’s sleep patterns, how much sleep they should ideally be getting, how you can encourage proper sleeping habits, and most importantly, WHEN you will finally get a good night’s sleep again.
When and how much do newborns sleep?
Newborns need a lot of sleep. On average, your newborn will sleep for approximately 16-20 hours in a 24-hour period. That’s the good news. The downside is that newborn sleep is mostly irregular, takes place in short bursts and doesn’t follow a particular pattern at first.
Up until 6 weeks or so, your baby’s naps can last from anywhere between 10 minutes to 4 hours. When your baby awakes, it is usually to be fed, burped and changed, after which your baby will go back to sleep. It’s important to remember that newborns can’t stay awake for too long at a time. Their “awake time” usually lasts up to an hour, after which they go back to sleep. As they grow older, this obviously increases and by 4-6 months, they can stay awake for up to 2 hours at a time. Some babies do tend to stay awake for longer periods but this can cause your baby to become overtired. An overtired baby is usually fussy, cranky and harder to manage. That’s why it’s important to make sure your baby naps frequently through the day.
Here’s a quick look at your newborn baby’s sleep schedule for the first three months.
1-month old baby sleep schedule | Sleep duration ranges from 15 minutes to 3 hours at a time | Can stay awake for 35-45 minutes |
2-month old baby sleep schedule | Sleep duration ranges from 15 minutes to 3 hours at a time | Can stay awake for up to 1 hour at a time |
3-month old baby sleep schedule | Sleep duration ranges from 30 minutes to 3 hours at a time | Can stay awake for up to 1.5 hours at a time |
Why do newborns sleep so much?
Firstly, your newborn baby has a very tiny stomach and needs to be fed very often. Sleep is also important for your newborn baby’s growth and development. You might also wonder why your baby sleeps so much during the day. It’s because a newborn’s circadian rhythm is not properly developed and so, they cannot tell the difference between day and night. Hence, you cannot expect newborn sleep patterns to be like your own.
What is a newborn baby’s sleep cycle like?
A newborn baby’s sleep cycle lasts for about 40-50 minutes on average. Your baby’s sleep cycle has two phases: light sleep (REM sleep) and deep sleep (non-REM sleep). For the first few months, babies spend more time in REM sleep which is when most of their brain growth and development takes place. As babies spend more time in light sleep, they also wake very easily and frequently. When your baby is about 6 months, their sleep cycle will become longer and their REM sleep periods will reduce.
How can you help encourage proper sleep habits?
The most common question that most new parents ask is how to make a newborn baby sleep, and better still, how to make baby sleep through the night? Although your newborn’s sleep pattern is going to be irregular for a while and they won’t sleep through the night until they are a few months old, there are ways in which you can encourage good sleeping habits right from the start to make the routine easier for both you and your baby. Here are a few newborn baby sleep tips:
And yes, parents. We promise that you will get a good night’s sleep again someday. At around 6 months of age, your baby will start sleeping deeper and for longer periods. At this point, most babies start sleeping through the night. However, every baby is different and if your little one hasn’t reached this milestone yet, don’t worry. Keep working at establishing good sleep habits and a consistent bedtime routine and eventually, your baby’s sleep schedule will fall right into place. Good luck, parents. Got any questions for us? Moms – does your newborn baby have bouts of uncontrollable crying, even after you’ve tried everything to comfort him/her?
]]>Moms – does your newborn baby have bouts of uncontrollable crying, even after you’ve tried everything to comfort him/her? Does this usually happen during the late afternoon/evening? Do you notice a clenching of the fists and stiffening of the body during these crying bouts? If so, your baby may be suffering from Colic. Let’s find out more about this common newborn baby condition.
What is Colic?
Although doctors haven’t been able to pinpoint the actual cause of colic in babies, it is formally defined as ‘episodes of crying for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for three weeks, in an otherwise healthy child’. Colic seems to usually cause some kind of tummy discomfort in babies, leading experts to suggest that it might happen due to digestive issues.
If you notice symptoms of colic in your baby, first get your baby checked by a healthcare professional so that you can rule out any other problems.
Colic can be extremely distressing for both Mom and baby and can lead to feelings of hopelessness and frustration. Hang in there, parents. This too shall pass. This condition can affect your baby right from the second week onwards and tends to peak somewhere around the six-week mark. It usually goes away for most babies by the time they are three to four months old, and in some cases, when they are nine months old.
Even though there are no official remedies for treating colic, there are many ways in which you can help soothe your colicky baby. Here are some methods to help ease your little one’s discomfort:
Keep your baby moving: Hold your baby in a front carrier or against your chest and walk around the house. Gentle, rhythmic movements can help soothe your baby so try rocking him/her in your arms or taking your baby outdoors in the stroller for some fresh air.
Massage your little one: As abdominal discomfort is one of the main symptoms of colic, massaging your baby gently can help relieve gas and reduce pain. You can try laying your baby on the tummy and gently massaging his/her back, or massage his/her tummy in a slow, clockwise motion.
Another way to help your baby pass gas is by laying your little one on his/her back and then gently moving the legs up and down in a pedaling motion.
Establish a good bedtime routine that includes a warm bath: A consistent routine can help calm your baby. Giving your little one a soothing warm water bath before bedtime could help relieve pain and discomfort.
Play white noise: Re-create the feeling of being in the womb by playing soothing white noise sounds to help your baby sleep. Either get a white noise machine or download the sounds on to your mobile phone. Sounds made by the vacuum cleaner, hair drier, washing machine, running water can all be soothing for your little one.
Create a peaceful environment: While some babies need white noise to feel soothed and comforted, some can get overwhelmed by too many sights and sounds. See what your baby responds to best. Create a calm environment by taking your baby into a quiet room, eliminating any outside noise and dimming the lights. Gently hum to your baby and keep him/her close to your chest and snuggle.
Reduce air swallowed during feeding: While feeding, babies tend to swallow air bubbles which can also leave them feeling gassy and uncomfortable. You can try and prevent this from happening by making sure that your baby is latching on properly if you’re breastfeeding. If you’re bottle feeding, pour the milk into the bottle slowly and don’t shake it after. Look for anti-colic baby bottles. Feed your baby slowly while keeping his/her head elevated and hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle.
Use a pacifier: A lot of moms with colicky babies swear by pacifiers to help soothe their little ones. It helps babies stay calm and reduces anxiety and stress levels.
Swaddle your baby: Swaddling is the art of wrapping your baby snugly in a blanket or a ‘swaddle’ to make them feel safe and secure, just the way they felt in your womb. It can help your baby self-soothe and even sleep longer. Click here to see our range of GOTS certified 100% organic muslin cotton swaddles
Examine and adjust your diet slightly: When you are breastfeeding, you can pass on the food you are eating to your baby through milk. Certain foods can tend to aggravate your baby’s colic, so adjusting your diet a little might help. According to studies, here are some foods that moms of colicky babies should try and avoid - cow’s milk (and related products such as cheese, yoghurt and ice cream), cabbage, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, onion, and chocolate. Reducing your consumption of caffeine and spicy foods also tend to work for many mothers. If you are adjusting your diet, do it for at least a week and see if there is a difference. Speak to your doctor to make sure you’re still getting all the necessary nutrients.
Try changing your baby’s formula: If your baby is formula-fed, speak to your doctor and discuss whether you should change your formula. Switching to pre-digested formulas have been known to relieve the symptoms of colic in some babies.
Ask for help: Caring for a colicky baby is not easy. It can be exhausting and all-consuming. Don’t guilt yourself into feeling that it is your responsibility alone. Ask for help. Take the support of your spouse, family and friends and make sure you’re getting enough sleep as well. Divide duties so that you can take time to focus on yourself too.
Planning a busy day well in advance can save you from chaos and any last-minute worries.
]]>Planning a busy day well in advance can save you from chaos and any last-minute worries. The same strategy applies to planning your baby’s schedule as well. Caring for your little one is immensely gratifying but can also be immensely tiring. However, you can make this period less stressful by planning a schedule that’s built around your baby’s basic needs, some of which are as below.
Feeding time
In the initial month or two, feeding sessions take place almost every 2-3 hours. Each of these sessions lasts for 15-30 minutes on an average. This ensures that your baby is full and your milk supply is as per the demand. Track the time of each of the feed sessions initially.Once you and the baby are adjusted to this, feeding sessions will become fun and more predictable.
There! You have already completed the first step of planning your baby schedule.
Sleeping time
The next important thing for your baby’s growth is sleep, so ensure a proper sleep routine for your baby. Set up a calm and cool place for the baby to fall asleep easily. Of course, a baby’s sleep routine in the initial days is topsy-turvy and extremely hard to plan, but as time passes and your baby crosses the 2-month mark, he will soon start sleeping for around 4-5 hours at a stretch. This will give you the chance to slowly go back to your regular sleep routine as well. In the initial months, nap times will be very short, so try and plan your own routine and leisure-time keeping this in mind.
Potty Time
As a new mom, you are probably full of questions about your baby’s potty routine. How many times a day should your baby poop and how much is a normal amount? Don’t fret, moms. In the first month babies poop after every feed, which is around 12 times per day.Your newborn baby’s poop will be small yet very frequent. If your baby is eating more than he is pooping, you should consult your doctor regarding this. This frequency reduces in the next month and you will be able to start predicting their potty time.
Colic
Though one can’t plan for colic time in a baby’s schedule, you can look for some of the signs that trigger colic in babies. If your baby is crying inconsolably even after checking off all their needs, don’t panic. This phase is quite common. Speak to your pediatrician regarding this so that he/she can suggest ways in which you can help your colicky baby. Click here to know more about some of the reasons why your baby could be crying.
Boredom
This is absolutely normal. Just as adults get bored, so do babies. Try to entertain them by making them listen to various sounds, rhymes or by playing your favourite music. Give your little one a daily massage and do some simply baby stretches. Play simple games like ‘peek-a-boo’ to keep your baby entertained.
These are some of the pointersaround which a baby’s schedule can be designed. Before you start planning, know that every baby is unique and what works best for one may not work for another. Plan a routine that suits both you and your baby. As your little one grows older, planning this schedule will also become easier.

As a new parent, you’ve probably been told countless times about why it’s important to burp your baby! So today, we’re going to answer some of the most important questions about burping babies, including how, why and when babies need to be burped. Here we go!
WHY do babies need to be burped?
Just like adults, when gas gets stuck in your baby’s tummy, it causes them discomfort, which is generally relieved by letting out the air in the form of a burp. Since your baby’s digestive system is still developing, your baby needs a little help from you to let out burps.
There are three main reasons why your little baby has gas:
1. Swallowing of air
During bottle feeding or breastfeeding, your baby tends to swallow some air as well along with the milk. This usually happens when your baby tries to swallow too fast. Hence it is more common with bottle-fed babies or breastfeeding moms who have a very fast flow of milk. If you’re bottle feeding, you could try to use a nipple that prevents your baby from swallowing too much air. If you’re breastfeeding, try holding your baby in a position that prevents them from drinking too fast or you could even hold them more upright while feeding.
2. Digestion
Breastfeeding moms pass on the food that they are eating to their baby through their breastmilk. Naturally, the baby too must break down these foods in the digestive system and this can cause gas as well. If you are breastfeeding, try and avoid foods that cause a lot of gas.
3. Food intolerance
Some babies are intolerant towards certain foods that the Mom might eat and pass on through her milk. Bottle fed babies too can be intolerant towards certain types of formulas. This can cause gas and discomfort.
WHEN should you burp your baby?
Since babies can’t talk, they will usually cry when they are experiencing any kind of discomfort. But even then, it’s hard to tell what the cause of that discomfort could be. That’s why it’s important to burp your baby, especially after feedings, to make sure he/she is comfortable. While some babies burp a lot, some might not burp that much.
If you’re breastfeeding, you should ideally burp your baby before switching breasts and after the feed is complete. If you’re bottle-feeding, you should burp your baby in between every 2-3 ounces of milk and after the feed as well.
It’s absolutely normal for your baby to spit up a little while burping. This is why most parents will always keep a burp cloth nearby to sling over their shoulder during burping.
HOW do you burp your baby properly?
Let’s take a look at the most popular and effective baby burping positions to help you burp your baby.
1. On your shoulder:
First, cover your shoulder and part of your baby with a burp cloth to avoid any messes.
Then, hold your baby over your shoulder so that baby’s chin rests gently on your shoulder.
Make sure you support your baby’s neck and head properly.
Hold your baby with one hand and gently pat or rub his/her back with the other hand until your baby burps.
Do this for a minute or so.
2. On your lap:
Put a burp cloth over your lap or make your baby wear a bib.
Place your baby in a sitting position on your lap.
Support your baby’s neck and head by cradling his/her chin in your palm while resting the heel of your hand on your baby’s chest. Do this very gently so as not to put pressure on your baby’s throat.
With your other hand, gently pat or rub his/her back until your baby burps.
Do this for a minute or so.
Pick a position that feels most comfortable and safe for both you and your baby. After feeding, usually try and keep your baby in an upright position for 10-15 minutes so that the milk doesn’t come up immediately.
When can you stop burping your baby?
As your baby grows older, you won’t have to constantly burp him/her. Usually this happens between 4-6 months of age, and as they start eating solid foods. If you feel that your baby still has a lot of discomfort due to gas, you can continue burping them. Sometimes, giving your baby a massage or moving their legs back and forth in a cycling motion while laying them on their back can also help relieve gas.
We hope that we covered all you need to know about burping your baby. If you have any other questions about baby burping, leave a comment below and we’ll try our best to answer your query.
]]>Babies cry for a number of reasons. And since they can’t talk yet, crying is their way of communicating with you and simply means that they are trying to tell you something.
]]>Babies cry for a number of reasons. And since they can’t talk yet, crying is their way of communicating with you and simply means that they are trying to tell you something. So, how can you tell what it is? Take a look at our list of common reasons why your baby might be crying and try and apply them to everyday situations. Next time your baby cries, do a quick run-through to see if your baby is upset due to any of the following reasons, and then comfort them accordingly.
1. Your baby is hungry
Just like us, babies too get very cranky when they’re hungry. In fact, crying is a late sign of hunger. That’s why it’s important to look out for early signs of hunger like sucking of the thumb/fist or smacking of the lips. Once you get into a proper feeding rhythm, you won’t notice this happening very often.
2. Your baby needs a diaper change
A dirty diaper can be very uncomfortable and can cause skin irritations as well, if left that way too long. Some babies will start crying as soon as they have soiled their diaper, while some are not bothered as much. Either way, changing your baby’s diaper when dirty will leave them feeling clean and fresh.
3. Your baby might be gassy or might need to be burped
A gassy baby is not a happy baby. If your little one is crying soon after a feeding, it could be due to tummy problems. Luckily, this can beresolved easily. One of the most common ways to burp your little one is by holding them over your shoulder and rubbing their back in slow, circular motions. To relieve gas, hold your baby on the stomach or left side and pat gently or place them on their back and gently push their legs up to their stomach a few times.
4. Your little one might be suffering from ‘colic’
The actual cause of colic is unknown but it is formally defined as ‘episodes of crying for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for three weeks in an otherwise healthy child’. In these cases, crying commonly occurs mostly in the evening but can also occur at other times. This condition can be extremely distressing for both Mom and baby, but don’t worry - it will eventually pass. Speak to your pediatrician regarding this so that he/she can suggest ways in which you can help your colicky baby.
5. Your baby is either too hot or too cold
When your baby cries, one of the first things to check is whether they are overheated or they are feeling cold. As per the rule of thumb, always dress your baby in one layer more than what an adult would wear in that weather. Dress your baby in breathable, lightweight fabric such as organic cotton to avoid overheating, and to keep them cozy and comfy. The Softsens range of baby bodysuits are all made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and are perfect for everyday wear.
Your little one can also tend to get cold easily, so try and make diaper changes and baths quick. Always check the temperature of the water first. It should ideally be around 37 degrees Celsius, i.e. not too hot and not too cold. If you can tell that your baby is visibly cold, then you can adjust the temperature a little.
6. Your baby might simply be sleepy
When your little ones get overtired, it’s harder for them to fall asleep. Instead, they may become cranky and upset. To avoid this, don’t wait for your baby to get tired before you try putting them to sleep. Look for early signs of sleepiness instead. If your baby is crying due to this reason, go into a quiet room, dim the lights, hold them close and speak to them in a soft voice. Swaddling your baby can also be very comforting and can help them fall asleep faster. Our ultra – soft and breathable Softsens 100% GOTS certified Organic muslincotton swaddles are designed with a whole lot of love & care to specially care for & comfort your baby, even helping them sleep better.
7. Your baby needs to be comforted and held
Your tiny little one is still adapting to this whole new world and needs lots of love, reassurance and security from Mom and Dad. Bond with your little one by carrying them for a short while every day or with a comforting massage. Swaddling is also a very helpful technique for comforting your baby as it can help them feel safe and secure.
8. Your little one’s clothes might be causing skin irritation
Sometimes, a harsh fabric or a clothing tag might cause your baby’s skin to itch, and in turn, make them cry. Always buy soft, light and breathable fabrics as your little one’s skin is extremely sensitive. We wholeheartedly advocate the use of organic cotton fabrics for babies. Here’s why:
https://bit.ly/2fXy3rg
9. It could be something that is not noticeable at first glance
Your baby could be crying due to some minor discomfort, which might not be noticeable at first glance. In such a case, it might be helpful to do a quick check to see if there is anything that could be irritating your little one. For example: if you have swaddled your baby, check to see if the swaddle is properly in place or whether it needs to be redone. It’s time to put those Mummy detective skills to full use.
10. Your baby could be teething
Teething pain can be extremely uncomfortable for babies. You can tell if your little one is teething by looking for signs such excessive drooling, swollen gums, sleeplessness or a need to chew or suck on anything in sight. You can also gently check their gums for signs of an emerging tooth with your finger. Teething usually begins at the four-month mark but some babies can begin teething earlier. Soothe your crying baby by giving them a gum massage with your finger. Sucking on a pacifier or chewing on a cold spoon can also help. Many teething toys are also available in the market.
11. Your baby might be overwhelmed
Too much noise and stimulation might leave your baby feeling overwhelmed and cranky. Try and keep their late-evening routine as peaceful and noise-free as possible so that they are not over stimulated when it’s time to sleep.
12. Your little one might be unwell
If it’s not one of the above reasons, it’s possible that your baby might be unwell. Check your baby’s temperature and observe their bodily fluids. Excessive crying can be a sign of illness. Speak to your doctor if you feel this may be the case.
We hope that this checklist will be useful to you on a daily basis. However, there are times when, even after checking off everything on the list, your baby is still crying. Don’t worry. Trust your instincts and have patience. As your baby grows and develops, this phase will also outgrow itself.
]]>Getting your baby to sleep well at night feels like a huge achievement sometimes, doesn’t it, parents?
]]>Getting your baby to sleep well at night feels like a huge achievement sometimes, doesn’t it, parents? But here’s the good news. Even though your baby might not always sleep as soundly as you’d like, there are a few practices you can follow every night to make sure that they start sleeping better. Just like bath-time and mealtime, your baby requires a consistent bedtime routine too. This routine helps signal to the baby that it is almost time for bed and also helps to soothe your little one Here are a few steps you can follow to make sure this happens.
1. Set a fixed bedtime
Sleeping at a fixed time every day will help your baby fall into the routine easily. Don’t wait for your baby to become cranky before you decide to put them to bed. Instead, put them to bed a little early and while they are still calm and relaxed. That way, you too might get some time for yourself.
2. Give your baby a relaxing bath
Don’t you just love a nice, warm bath after a long day? Well, your baby does too. A warm bath is the perfect way to get your baby ready for bed. Play some soothing music in the background if you like or simply let your baby relax in a quiet environment.
Softsens Body Wash is enriched with Natural Milk Cream and Shea Butter to gently cleanse, nourish and moisturize your baby’s delicate skin before bedtime and also has a tear-free formulation to prevent any kind of irritations.
3. Pamper your little one with a pre-bedtime massage
If your baby seems a little agitated or restless, a soothing massage after bath-time can be very helpful. A massage helps reduce the levels of cortisol, better known as the stress hormone, and calms your baby. It also relaxes their breathing and heart rate, getting them ready for a good night’s sleep.
Try our Softsens Calming Baby Massage Oil enriched with Olive and Vitamin E which naturally nourishes and moisturizes your baby’s sensitive skin leaving them in a state of pure baby bliss. Studies have shown that infants who are massaged by their parents before bed tend to fall asleep faster, sleep more deeply and sleep longer.
4. Swaddle them right
Wrapping your baby in a swaddle blanket helps your little one feel safe, secure and cozy. It is also known to help babies sleep longer and prevents your little one from getting startled awake by their own sudden reflexes.
Our supremely soft Softsens Swaddle Blankets are made from 100% GOTS certified Organic Muslin cotton to specially care for & comfort your baby, making them feel safe and secure.
5. Use this time to bond with your baby
Dim the lights and spend some quiet time with your little one by simply talking to them in a calm voice or even singing softly. A mother’s voice can be extremely soothing and is the perfect way to put your baby to bed! Sweet dreams, little ones.
What is the bedtime routine that you have set for your baby! Which of these practices do you follow?
]]>Dressing your baby is one of the most fun parts of being a Mom!
]]>Dressing your baby is one of the most fun parts of being a Mom! You definitely want to make the most of it before your babies get to the age where they want to pick their own outfits (not-so-fun for Mummy but hey, you’re raising an independent child, right?) While baby shopping is a whole lot of fun, the reality is - baby clothes are not very cheap! So how do you style your little fashionista while sticking to your budget? Here are a few tips that should help!
1. Stock up on the basics
Invest in some premium-quality basic baby clothes like bodysuits and leggings, in a range of light colours. You can then mix & match them to create a variety of outfit combinations and can also use them for layering. This may involve spending a little more money initially, but it is more practical in the long run. Check out our premium quality baby bodysuits for both boys and girls here
2. Track deals & discounts like a hawk
These days, most brands post updates about their latest deals & discounts to their social media pages. Keep an eye on them to snag great deals! If you don’t have time for that, simply sign up to be on their email lists. That way, you’ll receive an alert every time there’s a new deal.
3. There’s no shame in asking for gift cards
If your friends/family ask you what kind of gifts to buy for the baby, choose gift cards every time! This makes it easy for you to pick up the items you really need!
4. When in doubt, choose onesies
The onesie is the quintessential baby outfit for most occasions. It’s cozy, comfy and absolutely practical. Onesies are available in a range of colours, patterns and prints. They’re really easy to match with any outfit. For a girl, all you need to do is throw on a pair of leggings or a skirt to dress it up. For a boy, jeans or leggings work perfectly! You can even put on a few layers when the weather gets chilly. At Softsens, we have a range of adorable onesies that are perfect for everyday wear or even special occasions. Click here to browse our collection.
5. Don’t be afraid to buy larger sizes
You probably know this by now but babies grow at an alarming rate! Which means that today’s leggings will probably become tomorrow’s capris. To avoid this, think long-term when you go shopping. Buy leggings that are a tad bit longer and fold them at the bottom as your baby grows in length. An oversized top can double up as a dress for now and a top later on. Buy pants with comfortable stretchy waistbands if you buy larger sizes.
6. Matching sets are awesome and affordable
Instead of buying individual pieces of clothing, look for baby sets. The prices on these are always marked down. Check out our cute 3-piece baby sets here
7. Reuse & Recycle
Accept hand-me-downs from friends and relatives. Just as your own baby is outgrowing clothes at a lightning pace, their babies probably wore these clothes for a very short amount of time too. If you’re planning another baby soon, simply bundle up the clothes that your baby has outgrown and store them well for your next-in-line.
8. Pick organic cotton – it’s kinder on your pocket
One of the best things about Organic Cotton is that it is sturdier and more durable than conventional cotton. It does not break down as easily as regular cotton fibers which undergo chemical processes. In fact, organic cotton clothing can be washed ten times more than its conventional counterpart, which means you won’t need to shop as often, making it a more cost-effective alternative in the long run. All Softsens Apparel & Accessories are made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, available here
9. Wait for end-of-season sales
This is the best time to buy clothing for your baby! You can get great deals at end-of-season sales and it’s even advisable to pick up a few items that your baby will fit into as they grow older.
10. Select accessories that match with everything
When it comes to accessories like baby caps, headbands or scarves, pick ones in basic colours that you can then match with all of your baby’s outfits. Choose accessories like bibs of good quality as you would be using them and washing them very frequently. Organic cotton and muslin cotton bibs should be preferred since they do not break down as easily as regular cotton and last longer. Click here to explore some of our baby accessories
